About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Set in north Portland, Columbia View Park spans a generous 35.37 acres at the corner of North Lombard Street and Woolsey Avenue. This green space has been part of Portland's landscape since 1891, making it one of the city's oldest parks.
Nature's Canvas
Walk through the park and you'll be greeted by towering Douglas-firs and stately lindens that cast dappled shadows across the grounds. At the heart of the park lies an inviting meadow area - an ideal open space encircled by winding paths that meander through the boundary trees and plantings.
This thoughtful layout, inspired by a 1914 plan from Emanuel T. Mische, creates a space that feels both designed and natural. If you're craving sunshine or seeking shade, the park offers plenty of both, making it a welcoming destination regardless of when you visit.
Architectural Charm
Tuck yourself away from the elements in the park's historic picnic pavilion, part of a building designed by renowned architect Ellis Lawrence. The structure houses restrooms and showcases charming Tudor-style architecture with distinctive half-timbering and wide barge boards - a characteristic design shared with other early Portland parks.
A Hidden Oasis
Sitting at the edge of suburban sprawl, Columbia View Park creates an interesting transition between city life and more natural wooded areas. Despite neighboring a middle school and residential streets, there's a surprising sense of seclusion once you're inside.
Don't let the modest street view fool you - this park unfolds into a spacious retreat that belies its unassuming entrance.
Everyday Enjoyment
Local dog owners particularly appreciate the network of paths weaving through the grounds. Note that your four-legged friends need to stay leashed, as there aren't any fenced areas, and the park borders roads and a school.
The expansive grassy spaces are ideal for spreading out a picnic blanket or simply lounging with a good book. With its relatively peaceful atmosphere, it's an ideal escape when you need a break from city bustle.
Summer Community Spirit
During summer months, Columbia View Park hosts "13 Nights on the River" from June through September. This outdoor concert series attracts locals who come to enjoy music, picnic on the lawn, and take in views of the Columbia River.
