About the Location
Park Features
Situated in Portland's Montavilla neighborhood, Harrison Park spreads out across a generous stretch of land with something for just about everyone. You'll find wide open grassy spaces great for tossing a frisbee, setting up an impromptu picnic, or letting your pup burn off some energy. Beyond the casual hangout spots, there's no shortage of proper recreational facilities too.
The thoughtful layout means whether you're looking to join a pickup game or just need some fresh air, there's space for various activities.
Play & Sports Options
Kids flock to the playground here, and it's easy to see why. With classic slides and swings alongside old-school teeter-totters, there's equipment suited for the tiny tots and the big kids alike. The laughter here is pretty much constant on nice days.
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed either. The baseball field is kept in great shape, complete with stands for spectators, and regularly hosts Little League games that bring the community together. There's plenty of room for soccer as well, plus a basketball court and tennis court that see plenty of action.
One nice addition: the park's snack shack offers treats at reasonable prices, especially when baseball games are in full swing. It's convenient to grab a quick refreshment while staying in the park.
Natural Beauty
Nature lovers should make a beeline for the nature patch at the south edge of the park. This collaborative project between Portland Parks & Recreation and the Bureau of Environmental Services creates habitat for pollinators while providing a peaceful spot for visitors.
Come spring, this pollinator garden transforms into a vibrant, buzzing little ecosystem that showcases Portland's commitment to bringing natural elements into urban spaces.
Don't miss the beautiful mature trees throughout the park - they provide a wonderful shady spots for reading or relaxing on hot summer days.
Community Hub
At 5 acres, Harrison Park functions as both a green space and a gathering place where neighbors meet, families celebrate birthdays, and local organizations hold events.
The park also serves an important safety function as a designated Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN). In the event of a major earthquake that disrupts phone services, this is where community members can find emergency assistance.
Getting Around & Amenities
You'll find street parking available, and there's a paved pathway leading to the play area, making the park accessible for folks with different mobility needs.
Just note that while there aren't permanent restrooms, porta-potties are usually available, particularly during sports events. Picnic tables are somewhat limited, but there's plenty of open space to spread out a blanket for an impromptu picnic.
For Dog Owners
While it's not officially designated as a dog park, Harrison Park is a hit with the neighborhood's four-legged residents. The expansive open fields give dogs plenty of room to chase balls and stretch their legs, making it a favorite spot for daily walks and play sessions.
