About the Location
Historic Design
When you step into Mellon Square, you're walking on a piece of history. Completed in 1955, this 1.37-acre urban plaza sits cleverly perched above an underground parking garage - pretty innovative for its time, actually, as one of the first modern garden plazas built over parking.
The square has a distinctive Modernist design with triangular patterns in its paving, crafted from marble sourced from Belgium, Italy, and Maryland. Mature American Sweetgum trees create welcome patches of shade, while raised planters burst with shrubs and seasonal blooms that add splashes of color throughout the year.
One of the true highlights here are the bronze fountains that complement the granite benches scattered throughout. These fountains create a soothing soundtrack that helps mask the city noise, offering a peaceful atmosphere even during hot summer days.
Urban Oasis
Tucked into Pittsburgh's bustling central business district, Mellon Square is a green retreat where office workers, shoppers, and tourists can catch their breath. It's a downtown space where you can gather with friends, unwrap your lunch, or simply sit quietly with your thoughts amid the city's urban landscape.
The elevated design helps reduce street noise, creating a more secluded feel. Look up and you'll notice how the surrounding skyscrapers form a dramatic architectural frame around the perimeter - an ideal balance of nature and urban design.
During summer, the square occasionally comes alive with music performances and food vendors. It's become something of a favorite spot for taking outdoor breaks from nearby hotels and offices - a place where you can enjoy a brown bag lunch without having to venture too far from work.
Views and Surroundings
Glance up from your bench and you'll be treated to views of the historic Omni William Penn Hotel and other noteworthy downtown buildings. There's something quite striking about the contrast between the open, green space of the square and the vertical lines of Pittsburgh's urban architecture surrounding it.
Keep an eye out for free concerts and events organized by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy. These cultural happenings add another dimension to the square, making it more than a pretty space for both locals and visitors.
History and Philanthropy
Mellon Square owes its existence to the generosity of the Mellon family, particularly banker Richard King Mellon, who saw it as part of a broader effort to breathe new life into downtown Pittsburgh and keep major businesses from fleeing the area.
The creative minds behind the design were landscape architecture firm Simonds & Simonds working alongside architects Mitchell & Ritchey. In its earlier days, the square hosted everything from presidential campaign rallies to social gatherings - truly a center of civic life.
Restoration
In 2014, the square underwent a significant restoration that carefully preserved its historic character while making it more functional for today's users.
The thoughtful renovation included fixing up those iconic fountains, enhancing the lighting for better evening use, introducing new plantings, and adding a terrace over Smithfield Street to create additional public space. The result honors the square's past while ensuring it remains relevant for future generations.
