About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Positioned in Pittsburgh's west side is Sheraden Park, a 52-acre green sanctuary with roots stretching back to 1914. That's when Pittsburgh purchased 23 acres of what was once the Sheraden farm - just the beginning of what would grow into the park we know today.
The park has expanded bit by bit over the decades to reach its current size. Many locals consider it a hidden green, and it's not hard to see why - the park maintains much of its historic character away from the city bustle.
Natural Setting
Straddling the Sheraden, Esplen, and Chartiers City neighborhoods, this park isn't your typical flat recreation ground. With its mix of wooded hillsides and more level areas, the landscape offers something for everyone - regardless of whether you're looking for a nature hike or a game of baseball.
The historic trees that dot the grounds create a sense of seclusion that's hard to find elsewhere in the city. There's something calming about walking under their sprawling canopies, momentarily forgetting you're still in Pittsburgh.
What You'll Find
For West Pittsburgh residents, Sheraden Park provides valuable green space. If you're visiting, you'll come across a good mix of recreational options including sports facilities, a refreshing swimming pool for those summer days, and playground areas where kids can burn off energy.
Nature enthusiasts can explore the woodland trail that winds through the more natural sections. And when you need a break, the park's restroom facilities and picnic areas provide comfortable spots to recharge.
Get Active
Sports lovers have plenty of options with tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, and a soccer field spread across the grounds. It's worth noting that these facilities aren't all in pristine condition - some are well-maintained while others show their age a bit.
The playground is a hit with families, however you might notice some wear on certain areas of the play surface. Still, it offers a good place for children to play and explore.
Looking Forward
Exciting changes could be on the horizon. Pittsburgh's Department of City Planning has been working on a master plan for Sheraden Park's future. One intriguing possibility involves acquiring land to connect the park with nearby Chartiers Creek, which would give visitors access to the waterfront.
The ultimate goal is to elevate Sheraden Park into one of Pittsburgh's signature community spaces. The challenge lies in addressing maintenance needs while preserving what makes this place special - the character and beauty of a park with more than a century of history behind it.
