About Memorial Park in Columbia
Memorial Park is a four-acre urban park located in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina. Situated in the Congaree Vista area between Main Street and the river, the park is bordered by Hampton, Gadsden, Washington, and Wayne Streets, just one block south of Finlay Park.
Dedicated on November 11, 1986, Memorial Park was created to honor those who served their country in various conflicts. The park's centerpiece is the South Carolina Vietnam Memorial, unveiled during its dedication. This monument stands as one of the largest of its kind outside of Washington, D.C., commemorating 980 South Carolinians who lost their lives in the Vietnam War.
Over the years, additional monuments have been added to the park, expanding its role as a place of remembrance. These include memorials for World War I, Pearl Harbor, the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, the USS Columbia warship, the Holocaust, and the Korean War. Each monument serves to educate visitors about different aspects of military history and sacrifice.
The Holocaust Memorial, unveiled on June 6, 2001, is particularly notable. It features a timeline and pictorial etchings that provide information about the Shoah (Holocaust) from 1933 to 1946. The memorial sits atop a Star of David and is surrounded by four benches, each bearing a quote from either a Holocaust survivor or liberator.
The park's landscape includes mature shade trees, grassy areas, and a small creek with a bridge, creating a peaceful environment for reflection and remembrance. Walking paths wind through the park, allowing visitors to explore the various monuments at their own pace.
Memorial Park serves not only as a place of commemoration but also as a green space in the urban environment of Columbia. It provides residents and visitors with a quiet area for contemplation, leisurely walks, or simply enjoying nature within the city limits.
