Mungo Park
About Mungo Park
A Brief History
Found in Columbia, South Carolina, Mungo Park breathes new life into what was once the Rawls Creek Golf Course. Spanning an impressive 118.4 acres, this green haven was a generous gift from the Mungo family to the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission back in 2018. Now bearing the name Michael J & Mary Meech Mungo Park, it's become a treasured retreat for folks living in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Trails Worth Exploring
If you're looking for a pleasant stroll or a more vigorous workout, the park offers about four miles of paved pathways that follow the old golf cart routes. These winding trails take you through peaceful green spaces that strike an ideal balance between maintained parkland and wilder, more natural areas.
What makes these trails unique is how they preserve the rolling hills of the former golf course - perfect if you're after a bit of a cardiovascular challenge. One of our favorite spots is the footbridge crossing Rawls Creek, which adds a touch of charm to your journey. The paths are paved but gradually returning to nature, giving you something of a trail running experience without having to worry about tripping over roots or rocks.
The Meech House
Standing at the heart of the park is the renovated former clubhouse, now known as the Meech House. This spacious venue has been transformed into a versatile community space available for rent. From business meetings to weddings and school events, the Meech House provides a clean, welcoming environment for all sorts of gatherings.
It's an interesting transformation from the building's former life as a golf clubhouse.
Finding Your Way
Mungo Park sits comfortably among several residential neighborhoods including Amberly, Brittany, Coldstream, and First Colony. This convenient location makes it an easy escape for locals and a worthwhile destination for visitors from further afield.
The landscape offers a refreshing mix of manicured spaces and areas where nature is gradually reclaiming its territory. It's a quiet space that feels removed from city life despite its convenient location within the community.
Good to Know Before You Go
The park features tennis courts and plenty of parking space. It's a popular spot for dog walking and outdoor exercise.
You should know that there are currently no restrooms, water fountains, or trash cans along the trails themselves, so it's wise to come prepared if you're planning a longer visit. Also, the paths follow the original contours of the decades-old golf course, meaning they're not fully ADA compliant in all areas.
