Arrowhead Park
About Arrowhead Park
Historic Quarries
Arrowhead Park gets its name from a distinctive, arrowhead-shaped granite quarry - one of three historic quarries that have been transformed into peaceful lakes throughout the grounds. There's some real history in these waters - stones quarried from this very spot were used to build several downtown Sioux Falls landmarks, including the Old Courthouse Museum.
When you walk around these quarry ponds, you'll be treated to some pretty dramatic scenery - impressive rock cliffs and rugged banks create landscapes that don't feel like typical South Dakota terrain. One spot that's particularly worth seeking out features a towering rock cliff with a hidden grassy cove nestled among the surrounding walls of stone.
Natural Sanctuary
The park is a bird sanctuary, making it a great spot if you're into birdwatching. The diverse ecosystem here attracts all sorts of wildlife, giving you plenty of opportunities to connect with nature in a genuinely peaceful setting.
The quarry ponds are teeming with waterfowl - you'll spot mallard ducks, Canadian geese, and Greylag geese paddling about. You can feed these feathered residents, but be sure to check the signs for approved food options (skip the bread and crackers - they're not recommended).
Across the park, the City's Parks Department has cultivated native prairie grasses, creating authentic prairie landscapes along many of the trails. It's a nice touch that helps maintain the natural character of the area.
Trail Network
If you're looking to stretch your legs, Arrowhead offers a mix of paved and unpaved hiking trails that wind through the former quarry areas. Most of the paved paths are clearly marked with distance information, making it easy to plan your walk. The terrain is generally level and gentle - well-suited for an easy family outing.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, several primitive dirt trails take you through forested sections and down into ravines. When you need a breather, you'll come across benches placed thoughtfully throughout the trail system.
Historical Features
One of the park's standout attractions is a restored 1888 barn that some believe was designed by renowned architect Wallace Dow. This historical structure adds character to the landscape and offers a glimpse into the area's past.
To find this piece of history, just follow the signs after entering the park. The barn sits up a long road from the main entrance, near the upper picnic area.
Visitor Amenities
When hunger strikes, head to one of the picnic areas near the barn at the top of the park. The tables are well-maintained, and the grassy spaces make for perfect spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch with family or friends.
As for facilities, you'll come across a main restroom building and portable toilets near the water features. Just note that the main restrooms might be closed during off-season months.
Parking is available in two small lots - one by the quarry pond and another further up the road near the barn.
Park Rules
Important to know before you go: pets are not allowed in the park, likely to protect the waterfowl sanctuary. You'll also need to leave bicycles and skateboards at home, as they're not permitted on the grounds.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 10PM, but you should plan to wrap up your adventures before sunset since the trails aren't lit at night.
Location
Situated just outside the city limits, Arrowhead Park offers a peaceful retreat from urban life. It's a blend of natural beauty, history, and outdoor recreation within the Sioux Falls park system.
The setting is popular with photographers - you'll often see families posing for portraits or seniors getting their graduation pictures taken, especially in autumn when the trees change color.
