Yankton Trail Park
About Yankton Trail Park
Park Overview
Next to the banks of the Big Sioux River, Yankton Trail Park spans a generous 21 acres in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There's a bit of history in that name - it marks the spot where early pioneers crossed the river en route to Yankton, the capital of what was then Dakota Territory.
The park provides a natural retreat that can be hard to find within city limits. The well-kept grounds and riverside scenery create a natural escape that doesn't require a long drive out of town.
Soccer Fields Galore
If you're into soccer, this park has a lot to offer. The Manfred Szameit Soccer Complex boasts around 21 beautifully maintained grass fields that transform into a hub of activity during tournament season. The facility hosts invitational, regional, and state competitions, drawing teams from across the region.
A word to the wise if you're heading to a tournament: the park offers plenty of parking with multiple entry points, but you might want to give yourself extra time during those busy event weekends. The lots can fill up quickly when the competition heats up!
Hit the Trails
A notable feature is the park's connection to the Sioux Falls bike trail system. No matter if you're cycling, jogging, or just out for a leisurely stroll, the paved paths offer a great way to experience the riverside landscape.
Many sections of the trail are shaded by trees - a blessing during those hot summer days. As you explore, you'll come across the historic Yankton Trail bridge, which adds a touch of character to your journey.
The trails here aren't isolated - they're part of a broader 20-mile network that meanders through green spaces along the river throughout Sioux Falls, so you can really extend your adventure if you're feeling ambitious.
Beyond the Soccer Fields
The park doesn't just cater to soccer enthusiasts. You can find permanent restroom facilities with running water scattered throughout the complex, along with some portable toilets in other areas.
When hunger strikes, head to one of the picnic areas with seasonal tables. The open spaces make great spots for impromptu games of frisbee or catch, and many locals even use the grounds for dog training (just remember to bring your own waste bags).
Community Happenings
Throughout the year, Yankton Trail Park transforms into a venue for all sorts of community events. The relatively flat terrain makes it great for cross-country competitions, including the Nike Regional Cross Country races that test runners on its fast course.
Beyond sports, the park hosts various festivals and community celebrations. There's something about its expansive layout that makes even larger gatherings feel comfortable rather than crowded.
For the everyday visitor, the mix of open fields and wooded trails creates diverse settings for whatever outdoor activity suits your mood - be it a morning run, an afternoon bike ride, or simply finding a quiet spot to enjoy the sounds of the river.
