Falls Park
About Falls Park
Natural Wonder
Situated in north central Sioux Falls, South Dakota lies Falls Park - a 123-acre public space that showcases the magnificent waterfalls that gave the city its name. These cascades on the Big Sioux River formed roughly 14,000 years ago during the last ice age, tumbling over Sioux quartzite rock formations that date back an astonishing 1.5 billion years.
Every second, 7,400 gallons of water plunge 100 feet through the falls, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power. The contrast between the rushing water and the distinctive pink quartzite rocks beneath creates a striking visual. If you visit during high water seasons, you'll witness the falls at their most dramatic.
Take in the Views
You can find plenty of spots to admire these natural cascades throughout the park. The five-story observation tower offers sweeping panoramic views and also houses a visitor information center where you can learn more about what makes this place so special.
Want to get closer to the action? A network of footbridges and walkways lets you experience the falls up close - sometimes close enough to feel the refreshing spray on your face. As you wander, you'll notice informational plaques that tell the story of the area's geological formation and historical significance.
A Glimpse into History
Falls Park isn't just about natural beauty - it's also home to some of Sioux Falls' oldest structures. On the east side of the river stand the remnants of the Queen Bee Mill, a seven-story building constructed in 1881. Despite its ambitious design, the mill operated for just two years before closing due to insufficient water power and wheat supply.
Another historical site is the Sioux Falls Light and Power Company building from 1908, which now houses the Falls Overlook Café. It's an ideal spot to grab a coffee or ice cream while taking in the riverside scenery.
History buffs will appreciate the collection of locks at the turbine house next to the falls - each one with its own story connecting to the park's industrial heritage.
Your Visit Experience
Beyond the falls themselves, the park offers extensive walking paths and green spaces to explore. Many visitors enjoy a bit of rock climbing on the accessible quartzite formations - just remember to wear appropriate footwear and be careful!
Bringing your four-legged friend? No problem. The park welcomes leashed dogs to join in the adventure. While there aren't designated picnic tables, the open grassy areas make ideal spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch with a view.
The park changes with the seasons and is used by the community year-round. During the holidays, the annual Winter Wonderland light display adds a magical touch to the already stunning landscape. And in winter, you might catch the rare and beautiful sight of partially frozen cascades.
Getting Around
A web of biking and walking trails connects Falls Park to the broader Sioux Falls trail system, making it a great starting point for longer adventures. Coming by car? You can find ample parking available.
The park is thoughtfully designed with accessible restrooms throughout and walkways that provide good access to most main viewing areas.
Open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight year-round, Falls Park lets you experience this natural wonder in every season. And the best part? Admission is completely free, ensuring everyone can enjoy this remarkable piece of South Dakota's landscape.
