Legacy Park
About Legacy Park
A Breath of Fresh Air in Sioux Falls
Found in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Legacy Park offers 117 acres of open space where nature and recreation blend seamlessly. With Skunk Creek flowing through its grounds, there's something calming about spending time here, whether you're looking for an active adventure or just a peaceful escape from city life.
Hit the Trails
The singletrack trail system is definitely one of the park's highlights. With about 3 miles of well-maintained paths winding through flat, grassy terrain, these trails are ideal for everyone from mountain biking newbies to seasoned trail runners. The machine-built, multi-use design means you won't feel out of place whether you're hiking, jogging, or cycling. If you're into off-road biking, you'll appreciate the clearly marked trails that make navigation a breeze.
Smooth Sailing on Paved Paths
If dirt trails aren't your thing, the park's paved walking paths offer a more manicured experience. These smooth pathways meander through the landscape, crossing several bridges and offering lovely creek views along the way. They're ideal for a casual stroll, morning jog, or easy bike ride. Just keep in mind that there's not much shade coverage, so you might want to bring a hat and sunscreen during those summer months. The flat, accessible design means everyone can enjoy these paths, regardless of ability level.
Connected to the City and Beyond
What's great about Legacy Park is how it ties into the larger Sioux Falls bike path network. You can easily access the park by bike and use it as a launching point to explore more of the city. The trails connect to Dunham Park to the south and Family Park to the north, making it easy to extend your adventure. If you're feeling ambitious, the entire Sioux Falls trail system spans about 20 miles - excellent for a day of exploration on two wheels.
Water Activities
If you're drawn to water, Legacy Park has you covered. The fishing area and fishing dock provide spots to cast a line, while boat, canoe, and kayak access opens up possibilities for getting out on the water. There's something special about walking along the trails with the gentle sound of the creek as your soundtrack - it adds an extra dimension to the experience.
Nature's Display
The park features a dedicated nature area where you can take in the local ecosystem. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife - you might spot Great Blue Herons or Kingfishers going about their business along the creek. Besides the singletrack system, there are additional walking trails ideal for a leisurely nature walk or some peaceful bird watching. The scenic creek views make for some pretty spectacular photo opportunities, too.
The Little Things That Matter
Legacy Park gets the basics right with clean restroom facilities and drinking fountains available when you need them. Cyclists will appreciate the thoughtful touch of a bike repair station near the bathrooms - super handy if you need to make a quick adjustment during your ride. The recently updated parking lot provides plenty of space and is easy to navigate. While seating is somewhat limited around the park, the convenient location along West 12th Street makes it easily accessible whether you're a local or just visiting Sioux Falls and looking to enjoy some outdoor time.
