About Tennessee Riverpark
A Scenic Urban Escape
Stretching 13 miles along the southern banks of the Tennessee River, the Tennessee Riverpark is Chattanooga's cherished outdoor corridor. This paved greenway connects downtown Chattanooga to Chickamauga Dam 8 miles east and extends to the Historic St. Elmo neighborhood 4 miles south.
Locals affectionately call it the "Riverwalk," and it's easy to see why it's become a favorite spot for cyclists, runners, skaters, and those just out for a peaceful stroll. The concrete path weaves through neighborhoods and business districts, offering gorgeous river views and moments of natural beauty that make you forget you're in the heart of the city.
Where to Jump In & What You'll Find
You can hop onto the Riverpark from numerous parking areas and trailheads dotted from Chickamauga Dam all the way to St. Elmo. Once you're there, the amenities are plentiful - fishing piers where locals cast their lines, boat ramps for water enthusiasts, picnic spots excellent for lunch breaks, playgrounds for the little ones, and clean restrooms (always a plus for any outdoor adventure).
The path is sprinkled with public art installations that add character to your journey, along with interpretive signs that tell the story of the area's rich history and ecology. If you're drawn to the water, several docks extend into the river, offering prime fishing spots and quiet places to sit and watch the water flow by.
Places to Play & Relax
Packed a lunch? You'll find plenty of picnic areas with tables and charcoal grills around the park. Planning something bigger? Several large pavilions can be reserved, including an air-conditioned indoor facility that's well-suited for gatherings in the summer heat.
Kids have options too - there's a larger playground in the main area, plus smaller play spaces scattered along the route. Open fields provide room to toss a frisbee or just spread out a blanket and enjoy the sunshine.
Beyond the Riverpark
Feel like exploring further? The park connects to the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway, adding another 3 miles of trail that extends to Sterchi Farm Park. With recent expansions, the entire trail system now covers nearly 30 miles - enough to satisfy even the most enthusiastic outdoor enthusiasts.
The Riverpark is popular with both locals for daily recreation and visitors exploring Chattanooga's outdoor spaces.
Worth Noting
Take a moment at the Wreath of Honor memorial, a thoughtful tribute to military personnel who lost their lives in service. It's a peaceful spot for reflection amidst your riverside journey.
Forget your bike? No problem. Rental stations are available if you want to cover more ground. Regular maintenance and security patrols are in place throughout the year.
