About the Location
Riverside Getaway
Tucked away along the Holston River, Carl Cowan Park spans a generous 110 acres of public green space. This riverside area offers pretty water views and a place where you can get out on the water.
If fishing is your thing, cast a line from the dedicated fishing pier or find your own special spot along the riverbank. Bringing your boat? No problem - there's a boat ramp ready for your watercraft, with easy access for kayakers too.
We'd recommend sticking around for sunset if you can - the views over the water are genuinely spectacular. There's something about the peaceful atmosphere and that gentle river breeze that just helps the day's stress melt away.
Get Your Game On
When you're ready to move from relaxation to recreation, Carl Cowan offers several sporting options. The baseball and softball fields stay busy with tournaments and leagues year-round. If you're more into basketball or tennis, you'll come across courts ready for your next game.
Interestingly, the tennis courts pull double duty with pickleball court striping - perfect if you've jumped on the pickleball bandwagon like everyone else these days. Soccer fields round out the offerings, however just note that parking can get tight during game days.
Kid-Friendly Fun
For the little ones, Carl Cowan has nice amenities. The playgrounds feature all the climbing structures, slides, and interactive elements that kids love, especially tailored for toddlers up to 10-year-olds. During summer, the splash pad becomes the park's star attraction for cooling off.
You'll appreciate the thoughtful layout, with restrooms conveniently located near the play areas. Many locals consider the splash pad one of the best in Knoxville, though remember it's only operational during warmer months.
Picnic Paradise
Hungry? The park offers numerous picnic areas with tables and grills scattered across the grounds. For larger gatherings, the covered pavilions can be reserved ahead of time, or you can try your luck on a first-come basis.
Many of these picnic spots feature lovely water views, creating a great backdrop for family get-togethers. The largest pavilion sits conveniently close to parking and the splash pad, making it particularly practical for bigger events.
Natural Escapes
If you need some quiet time with nature, explore the park's walking trails and wooded sections. The paved walking track that circles part of the park provides an easy surface for your daily steps or jog.
Feel like a longer walk? The connecting trails wind through wooded areas along the water all the way to nearby Admiral Park. Dog owners, rejoice - your four-legged friends are welcome here, though they'll need to stay leashed.
A Bit of History
What's now a community hub began as farmland until the 1980s, when it transformed into the public recreational space we enjoy today. Carl Cowan Park serves the community with its natural beauty and recreational amenities.
