About High Ground Park in Knoxville
High Ground Park is a 39-acre public park located in Knoxville, Tennessee. Opened in 2013, the park was established to preserve the historic Civil War site of Fort Higley. The fort, constructed in 1863 by Union forces, was part of a series of fortifications built to protect Knoxville during the Civil War.
The park features a one-mile walking trail that winds through hardwood forests and past native wildflowers. The trail leads visitors to the site of the former Fort Higley, where some remnants of defensive emplacements such as rifle trenches and a cannon redoubt can still be seen. At the highest point of the park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area from signature red chairs placed for this purpose.
High Ground Park is designed to blend historical preservation with recreational opportunities. Educational signage along the trail provides information about the area's Civil War history. The park is part of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness Battlefield Loop, connecting it to other historical and natural sites in the area.
The park is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. Its location, approximately 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville, makes it an accessible destination for both locals and tourists interested in history or seeking a peaceful nature walk.
