About High Ground Park
A Hidden Civil War Spot
On a wooded hillside just minutes from downtown Knoxville sits High Ground Park, a 39-acre space where history and nature come together. Opened in 2013, this park preserves the historic site of Fort Higley, one of the lesser-known but fascinating chapters of Knoxville's Civil War story.
Built by Union forces in 1863, Fort Higley formed part of a defensive ring protecting the city during the Civil War. As you explore, you'll find informative signs along the trails that bring these stories to life without having to crack open a history book.
Trails Through Time
A one-mile walking trail meanders through mature hardwood forests, where seasonal wildflowers dot the landscape. The path eventually leads you to what remains of Fort Higley itself, where you can still make out rifle trenches and a cannon redoubt - silent reminders of the site's military significance.
Make your way to the highest point in the park, and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area. The thoughtfully placed Adirondack-style chairs invite you to sit and soak in the scenery. You should note that these vistas are most impressive during fall and winter when the trees shed their leaves and open up the view.
Changing Seasons, Changing Views
Each season transforms High Ground Park in its own way. Fall blankets the trails with mesmerizing colors, creating a photographer's paradise as the hardwoods show off their autumn finery.
Winter offers the clearest views from the summit. Without summer's dense foliage, you can finally appreciate those sweeping panoramas that remain hidden during the warmer months.
Your Own Adventure
Despite being just 15 minutes from downtown Knoxville, the park remains relatively undiscovered, offering a peaceful escape for hiking, walking your dog, or simply appreciating nature away from crowds.
If you're looking for a bit more adventure, try your hand at geocaching - there are several caches hidden within the park waiting to be discovered.
What to Know Before You Go
The park provides a clean parking lot at the trailhead, and the main path is well-maintained. Just be prepared for some uphill walking to reach those viewpoints - consider it your workout for the day.
Bring water and plan ahead as there are no restroom facilities or drinking fountains available. And during warmer months, you might want to pack some bug spray as mosquitoes can be particularly friendly here.
Planning Your Visit
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 9PM. Its convenient location makes it an easy stop whether you're a local looking for a quick nature fix or a visitor exploring Knoxville's historical sites.
High Ground Park also forms part of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness Battlefield Loop, connecting with other historical and natural areas nearby - perfect if you want to extend your outdoor adventure.
