Situated on 275 acres of natural landscape, the station serves as the headquarters for Outdoor Murfreesboro, a department of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation that specializes in environmental education and outdoor activities.
The facility features a nature center that houses various educational animals, including owls, a hawk, and snakes. Visitors can learn about local wildlife and ecosystems through interactive exhibits and educational programs offered by the staff. The Wilderness Station also provides free educational backpacks for checkout, each focusing on a different nature-related theme.
Surrounding the station are approximately 5 miles of hiking trails that wind through hardwood forests, limestone outcrops, and along the West Fork of the Stones River.
