About the Location
A Park With Deep Roots
Positioned in Abilene, Texas, Cobb Park stretches across 14 acres of community space. The park's story begins back in 1919, when H.H. and Susie Cobb from Fort Worth generously donated six lots of land to create what would become a popular public gathering place.
The park has grown up alongside the community it serves. The 1950s saw the addition of a covered pavilion, fantastic for picnics and gatherings regardless of Texas weather. In 1961, the recreation center opened its doors, followed quickly by an activity building in 1962. The little ones weren't forgotten either - a playground joined the scene in 1967, and got a much-needed facelift in 2012.
Community at Its Heart
Over the decades, the Cobb Recreation Center has developed into a central gathering place for Abilene residents. You'll discover all sorts of programs happening here, from energetic summer camps keeping kids active during school breaks to winter camps and after-school programs that provide safe, engaging spaces for young people.
The center welcomes an eclectic mix of activities that reflects the diversity of Abilene itself. If you're interested in country western dancing classes (boots optional!), need some help with dog training, or want to join one of the improvisation groups from nearby Dyess Air Force Base, there's something happening at Cobb that might catch your interest.
What's New
Cobb Park continues to evolve with the times. In 2023, a new disc golf course was added to the park, expanding the recreational options available at this historic site.
