About the Location
History and Origins
On May 28, 1956, what we now know as Scarborough Park first opened its gates as Hartford Park, named after the street it borders. Later, the city renamed it to honor Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Scarborough, whose contributions to Abilene's green spaces left a lasting legacy on the community.
Park Features
Spanning about 30 acres, Scarborough Park makes good use of its space. The park offers both natural areas and recreational spots for activities.
Despite its modest footprint, you'll come across a surprising number of facilities here - from volleyball courts to baseball fields and soccer areas. Its location near a school makes it a natural gathering spot for families after the bell rings.
Splash Pad
In 2016, following a community-approved parks bond, Scarborough got a major upgrade. August 18th marked the grand opening of a 3,000 square foot splash pad featuring 20 interactive spray features that bring joy to local kids (and let's be honest, plenty of adults too).
The splash pad isn't just fun - it's also environmentally conscious, recycling about 90 percent of its water. Located conveniently next to the playground and restrooms, it's great for cooling off during those hot Texas days. If you're bringing little ones, water shoes are a good idea for their sensitive feet.
Sports and Recreation
Community needs have shaped this park from early on. Back in its beginning days, Western Little League requested a baseball field, which found its home in the northeast corner. This field has since hosted countless games for 8-to-12-year-olds learning America's pastime.
Today, active visitors can take advantage of the volleyball courts or kick a ball around the soccer areas. If you're into something a bit different, the park's disc golf course offers a laid-back alternative to traditional sports.
Playground and Picnic Areas
The playground here caters to kids of all ages, with equipment for both toddlers taking their first wobbly steps and older children seeking more challenging climbs. Safety comes first with ample protective mulch underneath, and parents appreciate its proximity to the splash pad for easy supervision.
For lunch or family gatherings, the park's large covered pavilion provides shelter. With grills available and picnic tables spaced for both intimate and larger gatherings, it's an ideal spot to enjoy some fresh air with good company.
Amenities
You can find clean restroom facilities near the splash pad and playground - a thoughtful touch when spending several hours outdoors. Parking is available on multiple sides of the park, so you won't have to trek far with your coolers and sports equipment.
Dog owners will appreciate that their four-legged friends are welcome in the park's open spaces. Just remember that during busy times, keeping your pup leashed is the considerate thing to do.
