About the Location
Location and Setting
Tucked between Pecan Street and Collins Street just east of the University of Texas at Arlington campus sits Julia Burgen Linear Park, a sprawling 67.4-acre green space that offers a breath of fresh air in Arlington, Texas. With Center Street running through its heart, this park offers a peaceful retreat south of downtown and connects to Arlington's greenway system. Despite being a stone's throw from university life, there's something remarkably tranquil about this linear oasis.
Namesake and History
The park pays homage to Julia Burgen, a woman whose passion for the environment led her to serve on the Arlington City Council and advocate tirelessly for nature preservation throughout her life. When the park was dedicated in 2017, it was a fitting tribute to someone who had shaped how Arlington approaches its parks and open spaces.
Burgen was particularly instrumental in protecting Johnson Creek, which runs through the park. Like many natural spaces in Tarrant County, local history reveals that a former railroad once crossed this land before nature reclaimed it.
Features and Amenities
At the heart of this green space is a mile-long hike and bike trail that winds through the landscape. The paved paths are wide enough for walking side by side, excellent for a casual stroll with a friend or a more purposeful exercise session.
This trail isn't an island unto itself - it connects to Arlington's growing network of linear parks, part of the city's vision to create continuous green corridors along its waterways. Throughout your journey, you'll discover benches placed at scenic spots, great for catching your breath or simply soaking in the surroundings.
Playground and Picnic Areas
The park's modern playground is designed with different age groups in mind. The little ones (up to 5 years) have their own space with age-appropriate equipment, while older children can challenge themselves on the taller slides and climbing structures in the main play area.
Need a spot for lunch or a small gathering? The park offers a covered pavilion with seating that provides welcome shade on sunny Texas days. There are also several picnic areas scattered throughout the shadier sections of the park, complete with a grill for those who want to cook up something special.
Environmental Significance
Beyond its recreational value, Julia Burgen Linear Park helps with flood control and creates spaces where wildlife can thrive.
The natural landscaping approach allows native plants to flourish, creating habitats for local critters. If you visit in spring, you're in for a treat as patches of bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers paint colorful strokes across the landscape.
Visitor Information
You can enjoy the park daily from 5AM to 10PM. Just note that there are no public restrooms available, so plan accordingly.
Four-legged friends are welcome to join you, but remember to keep them leashed at all times so everyone can enjoy their visit. While weekends can bring more visitors, especially when the weather's nice, the park's residential setting means you'll rarely feel crowded out of your peaceful experience.
