About the Location
Natural Swimming Oasis
Situated in Austin's Travis Heights neighborhood, Big Stacy Neighborhood Park provides a refreshing escape from the Texas heat. Spanning several acres along E Live Oak St, this location is popular with both locals and visitors.
At the heart of the park sits the Big Stacy Pool - the park's main attraction. What makes this pool special? It's naturally heated by an underground well, keeping it comfortably warm year-round. It's known for consistently clean water and good maintenance.
Swimming Facilities
The pool stretches approximately 33 yards with 6 lanes that accommodate both serious lap swimmers and casual dippers. Thanks to that natural heating system, the water maintains a pleasant 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the year - making it an especially popular destination during winter months when other outdoor pools shut down.
You'll be happy to know that entry is completely free, however the pool is closed on Mondays and during rare freezing temperatures. Safety is well-handled with professional lifeguards always on duty. The layout includes both open swimming areas and dedicated lap lanes to accommodate different swimming preferences.
Park Amenities and Features
As part of the Austin Parks and Recreation system, Big Stacy offers more than just swimming. Just outside the pool fence, you can find a playground where kids can burn off extra energy, plus a nice grassy area well-suited for spreading out a blanket and soaking up some sun.
The park maintains clean restrooms and shower facilities, including wheelchair accessible options and multiple changing areas. The overall atmosphere remains peaceful and community-oriented, with well-kept grounds that invite relaxation.
Need a longer nature fix? The park connects to the Blunn Creek Greenbelt just across the way, where winding trails meander through beautiful trees and scenery. These paths are particularly popular for leashed dog walks - a perfect way to extend your park visit.
Unique Heating System
The pool's natural heating system has been working its magic since at least the 1980s. As a practical backup measure, the city has installed additional heaters to ensure uninterrupted warm swimming if the natural well system ever needs maintenance.
Accessibility and Parking
You can find free on-site parking, although the lot isn't huge and fills quickly during peak times. Street parking in the surrounding neighborhood provides a good backup option. The park welcomes visitors from 5 AM to 10 PM daily - meant for early morning lap swimmers or those seeking an evening dip after a long day.
