About the Location

Urban Oasis in Downtown Austin

The Capitol Mall is a newly developed public space in Austin, spanning several city blocks north of the State Capitol building. Completed in 2022 as part of the Capitol Complex Project, this urban park serves as a pedestrian-friendly gateway to the Capitol Complex.

The mall stretches from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to 16th Street along Congress Avenue, creating a tree-lined promenade that connects the Capitol grounds with the surrounding area. Its design incorporates grand civic spaces and shaded walkways, providing a pleasant environment for both visitors and state employees.

Landscape Features

The landscape features of the Capitol Mall include interactive sculpture pieces, defined seating areas, and gathering spaces. Over 200 shade and ornamental trees have been planted throughout the area, enhancing the green space and providing natural cooling.

The mall also includes a playground built on structure, offering recreational opportunities for families visiting the area.

Public Use and Purpose

As a public space, the Capitol Mall is designed to accommodate various activities, including tourism, events, and festivals. It serves as an extension of the Capitol grounds, offering additional areas for people to gather, relax, and enjoy the outdoors in the heart of Austin.

The development of the Capitol Mall is part of a larger effort to create a more cohesive and pedestrian-oriented Capitol Complex, improving the overall experience for visitors to the Texas State Capitol and surrounding government buildings.
