About Republic Square

Historic Origins

Republic Square is a one-acre urban park in downtown Austin, bordered by Guadalupe, San Antonio, 4th and 5th streets. It was originally known as Hemphill Square and was one of four public squares laid out in the 1839 Waller Plan of Austin, designed by Edwin Waller - making it one of a small number of surviving remnants of the city's original layout.

The park is home to magnificent heritage oak trees, including the Auction Oaks, which have quite the story to tell. These grand old trees witnessed the very first Austin city lots being auctioned off in 1839, essentially marking the birthplace of the city as we know it today. For much of the twentieth century, the square fell on harder times and was converted into a parking lot, before being revived as parkland in the mid-1970s as part of the United States Bicentennial celebration.

The surrounding neighborhood adds another cultural layer to the site's history. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area around the square was home to a significant Mexican American community, giving the district a depth that goes well beyond its civic origins.

Park Features

At the heart of Republic Square lies a welcoming central lawn surrounded by thoughtfully designed walkways and plenty of places to sit and take in the surroundings. The landscaping features native plants that give the space an authentic Texas feel.

You'll come across a convenient small kiosk housing restrooms and a café. If you're hungry, Rosen's Bagel shop offers delicious options right within the park grounds. The whole space got a major facelift in 2017, adding new amenities and transforming it into a more functional public space.

Community Hub

One of the park's highlights is the bustling SFC Farmers' Market that takes over every Saturday from 9AM to 1PM. It's a great place to grab farm-fresh produce, sample foods from local vendors, or pick up unique artisan goods.

During the year, the square transforms to host various cultural events and community gatherings. Need a midweek refresh? Free yoga classes are offered on Tuesdays - an excellent chance to stretch and breathe in the open air.

Transportation Center

The eastern edge of Republic Square acts as a vital transit hub for Austin's public transportation system. The square is a stop on two of CapMetro's rapid bus lines - Rapid 801 and Rapid 803 - which run along the city's central corridor. It also provides access to Route 20, which connects downtown directly to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, making the square a genuinely useful starting or ending point if you're traveling without a car.

This central location puts the park within easy reach for downtown workers, residents, and tourists exploring Austin's heart, but it does mean you'll rarely have the place entirely to yourself.

Daily Experience

As a green oasis amid the urban landscape, Republic Square offers a solid spot to take a break, enjoy lunch, or simply watch the world go by. Those magnificent heritage trees provide much-needed shade during scorching Texas afternoons.

Dog lovers will appreciate that the park is pet-friendly, with many locals bringing their four-legged friends for some fresh air. Just remember to keep your pup leashed and clean up afterward. While the park is a pleasant daytime destination, you should take normal urban precautions if visiting later in the day. The park operates from 6AM to 10PM daily.
