About the Location
A Green Oasis in Brownsville
Tucked away at the corner of Browne Road and California in Brownsville's Southmost area, Pedro "Pete" Benavides County Park spreads across 64 acres alongside Resaca de la Guerra. This spacious park honors the memory of longtime County Commissioner Pedro "Pete" Benavides.
Trails to Explore
If you're in the mood to connect with nature, the park's 1-mile Resaca frontage nature trail is a fantastic choice. The trail features two nature observation stations where you can pause to appreciate local wildlife and plant life in their natural habitat.
Looking to get your steps in? The 1.5-mile walking trail comes complete with five integrated workout stations for those wanting to mix cardio with strength training. The path is well-lit at night, making it a safe option for evening strolls when the Texas heat subsides.
Mountain biking enthusiasts haven't been forgotten - a dedicated mountain bike trail winds through the wooded sections, offering a more rugged outdoor experience for those seeking a bit of adventure.
Recreation for Everyone
The park keeps evolving to meet community needs. In October 2022, they added a new covered basketball court measuring roughly 100 feet by 70 feet. The court includes lighting and two covered bleacher areas, so friends and family can comfortably watch the action.
January 2025 saw the introduction of the park's first permanent public pickleball courts, embracing one of America's fastest-growing sports.
On hot days, the splash pad becomes the park's social center, where kids (and let's be honest, adults too) can cool off with some water play.
Sports options abound with soccer fields, baseball diamonds, and volleyball courts distributed throughout the grounds, making it easy to organize everything from casual games to more serious competitions.
Practical Amenities
Planning a family gathering? You'll discover numerous covered picnic tables scattered across the park, offering welcome shade for outdoor meals.
Clean restroom facilities are available for visitors, however it's always smart to bring some hand sanitizer along just in case.
Kids will gravitate toward the modern playground with its well-maintained equipment, providing a safe space for them to burn off energy and make new friends.
A Growing Community Hub
With ongoing maintenance and thoughtful improvements, this park has established itself as a vibrant gathering space for Brownsville residents.
Whether you're looking to get some exercise, spend time with family, take your dog for a walk, or simply enjoy some fresh air, Pedro "Pete" Benavides County Park offers a pleasant outdoor experience.
