Hazel Bazemore Park is a 77.6-acre park located on the Nueces River in Corpus Christi, Texas. The park is renowned for its unique position at the convergence of several major flyways, making it one of the most significant locations in the United States for hawk watching.
Since 1990, formal hawk counts have been conducted at the park, attracting bird enthusiasts from around the country. The park boasts the highest concentration of migrating raptors in the United States, with thousands of hawks flying overhead during the spring and fall migration seasons.
Natural Environments
Beyond its reputation as a premier bird-watching destination, Hazel Bazemore Park offers a diverse range of natural environments. The park encompasses a wetland, pond, and woodlands, providing varied habitats for local flora and fauna.
Birding kiosks are strategically placed throughout the park to assist visitors in identifying the various species they may encounter. The park's location on the Nueces River adds to its recreational appeal, offering opportunities for activities such as swimming and fishing.
Amenities and Improvements
Recent improvements to the park include the addition of a new splash pad and renovated restrooms, which were unveiled in February 2024. These new facilities are located next to the playground and are open daily from 8 am to 8 pm.
Future plans for Hazel Bazemore Park include the addition of a dog park and renovations to the hawk watching posts. The proposed dog park will be handicap accessible and feature amenities such as a sandbox, water fountains, picnic tables, benches, and a pond for active pets.
