About the Location

Premier Hawk Watching Destination

Nestled along the Nueces River in Corpus Christi, Texas, Hazel Bazemore Park spreads across 77.6 acres of diverse terrain. The park's unique position at the meeting point of several major flyways has earned it recognition as one of the most significant hawk watching spots in the United States.

Since 1990, dedicated enthusiasts have conducted formal hawk counts here, drawing bird lovers from across the country. During migration seasons, thousands of hawks soar overhead in spring and fall, creating an impressive spectacle. During these migration events, you'll often find yourself surrounded by friendly fellow watchers eager to share their knowledge and excitement.

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities

While the hawks steal the spotlight, they're just the beginning of what you might spot at Hazel Bazemore. Keep your eyes peeled for deer wandering through the grounds or javelina (wild pigs) rooting around in the underbrush. The bird diversity here is remarkable - some dedicated birders have counted up to 29 different species in a single day, with even the occasional colorful parakeet making an appearance.

The hawk observation deck offers sweeping panoramic views that really put the park's landscape into perspective. If you're into smaller winged wonders, check out the hummingbird feeders scattered throughout the park (though their maintenance does vary with the seasons, so they might not always be full).

Natural Environments

One of the park's charms is how it encompasses several distinct ecosystems within its boundaries. From a serene wetland area to a peaceful pond with its own observation deck, to stretches of shady woodlands, each environment hosts its own community of plants and animals.

Don't miss the scenic boardwalk near the river - it's lined with magnificent trees draped in wispy Spanish moss, creating a tranquil atmosphere as the wind whispers through the branches. The Nueces River itself adds another dimension to the park, excellent for fishing or taking a refreshing dip on hot Texas days.

Across the grounds, you'll find informative birding kiosks to help you identify what you're seeing. A practical tip: pack some bug spray for mosquitoes and watch your step for fire ants, especially during the warmer months. They're just part of the Texas outdoor experience!

Recreation Options

A two-mile loop road winds through the park, connecting its various areas and offering lovely views of the Nueces River. While there aren't extensive dedicated hiking trails, the open spaces are well-suited for walking, jogging, or simply wandering and taking in the natural beauty.

The fishing spots along the river are a real draw - many visitors come specifically to cast a line, with good catches reported regularly. No matter if you're here to fish or just enjoy a peaceful picnic by the water, you'll find plenty of spots to spread out and relax in the natural surroundings.

Amenities and Improvements

The park received some exciting upgrades in February 2024, including a refreshing new splash pad and fully renovated restrooms located right next to the playground. These facilities are open daily from 8 am to 8 pm, making them convenient for families spending the day.

Kids will love the large playground, which helps make Hazel Bazemore a truly family-friendly destination. Picnic areas with tables are scattered around the grounds - try to snag one along the water for especially pleasant outdoor dining.

The restrooms are well-maintained with handicap accessibility, although they're somewhat limited in number, particularly near the riverside areas. Looking ahead, plans for the park include adding a dog park and renovating the hawk watching posts. The upcoming dog park will be handicap accessible and feature thoughtful amenities like a sandbox, water fountains, picnic tables, benches, and even a pond where active dogs can splash around.
