About the Location

Natural Beauty Preserved

Tucked away about 6 miles from Denton Square lies Cross Timbers Park, a sprawling 70.2-acre haven that's doing something pretty special - protecting old-growth trees and native species that belong to the Cross Timbers & Prairies ecosystem, the ecological backbone of North Texas and Denton County.

What makes this park particularly meaningful is its role in safeguarding a piece of the Eastern Cross Timbers ecosystem, which is sadly disappearing as Denton continues to develop. This preservation didn't happen by accident - it's the result of teamwork between local homeowners, Denton Parks & Recreation, private donors, Denton ISD, Texas Master Naturalists, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

The landscape here is wonderfully diverse, with prairie stretches, wooded areas, and a creek meandering through it all. This variety creates a fantastic setting for spotting wildlife or simply appreciating the ecological richness that defines this corner of Texas.

Trails for Every Explorer

If you're looking to stretch your legs, Cross Timbers won't disappoint with its 1.92-mile trail network. You can find 1.17 miles of concrete paths for those who prefer a smoother journey, plus 0.75 miles of soft-surface trails for a more natural hiking experience. The well-kept Fletcher Trail connects to nearby Lake Forest Park - about a 20-minute walk one way if you're feeling adventurous.

Interestingly, the park is split into north and south sections connected by trails. And if you're up for more exploration, the trail system extends beyond the park's boundaries, offering options for longer walks.

Families will appreciate the two playgrounds with shade structures that keep the fun going even on sunny Texas days. There's also a basketball court and sand volleyball court for those looking to get a bit more active.

What to Know Before You Go

Since opening in 2002, Cross Timbers Park has been a favorite spot for Denton residents seeking natural beauty and outdoor recreation. The abundant shade across the park makes it especially pleasant, even during warmer months.

You'll discover several open grassy areas excellent for spreading out a picnic blanket, tossing a frisbee, or simply lounging with a good book. If fishing is your thing, the park's lake offers a quiet spot to cast a line.

History buffs might find it interesting that the park is believed to be near the former Alton settlement that was eventually abandoned. There was also once a pottery operation in the area during Denton County's early days.

Note that cell phone service can be spotty in some areas of the park, so it's something to keep in mind if you're planning to meet friends there. Also, be mindful of potential wildlife encounters - including snakes - as you're exploring this natural space.
