McKenna Park
About McKenna Park
History and Location
Located between Scripture and Panhandle Streets along N. Bonnie Brae Street in Denton, Texas, McKenna Park covers 18 acres of green space popular with locals.
The park bears the name of George McKenna, an engineer who worked in Fort Worth. Though he never actually lived in Denton itself, McKenna grew up in Denton County and later decided to leave his estate to city leaders specifically for creating this park.
Notable Features
You can't miss the large water tower standing tall in the center of the park - it's practically the unofficial landmark. The playground area here is quite elaborate, more extensive than your typical swing set. Eight slides and various climbing structures connect like an obstacle course, giving children plenty of options to play and burn energy.
Thoughtfully designed, the playground splits into different zones based on age. Toddlers have their own equipment separate from the big kid area. There's also a little car track where young children can bring their toy vehicles.
Beyond the standard playground fare, you can find a beginner rock climbing area that introduces kids to climbing in a safe setting. The park also features zipline seats that are popular with children. There's also a classic swingset featuring two regular swings and two baby swings.
Amenities
McKenna Park makes an excellent spot for outdoor gatherings with its multiple covered pavilions and picnic areas. If you're planning a family reunion or just want to enjoy lunch outside, there's plenty of space to spread out.
Feeling hungry? The park includes BBQ grills for those who want to cook something fresh. The expansive grassy areas work perfectly for impromptu soccer games, frisbee throwing, or simply sprawling out on a blanket.
If you're looking to shoot some hoops, head to the basketball court with its well-maintained rims and nets. For those who prefer a leisurely stroll or a more vigorous walk, the walking trails wind up and down hills, offering different levels of intensity depending on your mood.
Natural Setting
The grounds at McKenna are well-kept, with clean, manicured grass that's great for picnics. The sunset views are particularly nice in the evening hours.
Beautiful mature trees dot the landscape, providing character and some welcome shade across the park. Many locals come here simply to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, especially during evening walks when the day's heat begins to fade.
Visitor Information
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6 AM to 10 PM. One important thing to note: there are no restroom facilities or water fountains available, so you'll want to plan accordingly before heading over.
Parents, keep in mind that the playground sits on a hill next to a busy street, so you'll need to keep a watchful eye on little ones. While the trees offer some relief from the sun, the park can get quite warm during summer days, so morning or evening visits might be more comfortable during hot weather.
Overall, McKenna Park maintains a clean, well-kept environment that works for all sorts of activities - whether you're looking to walk, play, or simply find a quiet spot to relax for a while.
