About the Location
History and Origins
Dating back to 1911, Hillside Park stretches across 24.1 acres of Fort Worth, Texas. True to its name, the park occupies a hilly landscape once owned by E.B. Daggett, whose father Ephraim M. Daggett is widely regarded as Fort Worth's founding father.
The park has evolved significantly since its early days. The 1930s brought several improvements including new roads, walking paths, and a multipurpose shelter house that served the community's growing needs.
Park Development
As the neighborhood's demographics shifted mid-century, Hillside Park was designated specifically for African American residents. In 1960, a swimming pool was added, enhancing the recreational options available.
A significant milestone came in 2014 when a much-anticipated walking trail opened to the public. This addition was championed by Mary Ellen Blakemore, a lifelong Hillside resident whose dedication to the park has left an impact on the community.
Features and Facilities
While the undulating terrain isn't ideal for sports fields, it offers something equally valuable - a natural escape with character. The rolling hills provide nice views of downtown Fort Worth's skyline from the elevated grounds.
At the heart of community activities stands the Atatiana Carr-Jefferson Community Center (formerly Hillside Community Center). Built in 1970, this hub hosts various programs including after-school activities and drop-in basketball sessions that bring neighbors together.
Recreation and Amenities
The playground features well-maintained equipment with nearby benches where parents can relax while watching their children.
You'll also find clean restrooms throughout your visit, making it convenient to spend several hours exploring the park. The community spirit extends to practical support too, with food distribution programs offering fresh produce to local residents.
Natural Setting
Hillside Park offers a green space amid Fort Worth's urban landscape. The open areas provide a break from the city, with natural surroundings that have been preserved over the years.
The walking paths wind through the terrain, offering both a great workout and a chance to soak in the scenery. The park is a good spot for a morning stroll or connecting with the community.
