About the Location
A Park With History
Located in Fort Worth is Kellis Park, a 15.4-acre green space that dates back to 1950. The land was a gift from developers J.S. Foster & Sons - pretty generous of them, right? Over the decades, this space has transformed quite a bit into what we see today.
Interestingly, in 1960, Kellis was one of just four lucky parks in Fort Worth to get a swimming pool, but you won't find that feature anymore. The playground was renovated in 2006-2007 as part of the city's Small Capital Projects initiative.
The Natural Setting
The park features gently rolling terrain amid the surrounding urban landscape. There's plenty of open grassy space where you can toss a frisbee or spread out a picnic blanket on a nice day.
One of the park's unique features is a creek bed running through the grounds. It's usually dry, which actually makes it a fun extra walking path. The numerous shade trees scattered throughout the park provide welcome relief during the intense Texas heat.
Getting Active
Need to stretch your legs? The walking path that loops around the perimeter makes for an easy circuit whether you're power-walking or just enjoying a casual stroll. Sports enthusiasts will find tennis courts - two of them, in fact - plus a basketball court, however heads up: the basketball area has rims at different heights and is missing nets.
For families, the playground is definitely a highlight. It's thoughtfully designed with equipment for both tiny tots and bigger kids, featuring various slides and a swing set with two swings for the little ones and two for older children.
Scattered around the grounds are several picnic tables where you can enjoy an outdoor meal. And with all that open space, there's room for everything from casual catch to tag with the kids.
Practical Park Info
Getting here with kids and all their gear? No worries - there's a parking lot conveniently close to the playground area. When nature calls, you'll come across portable toilets rather than permanent facilities, so plan accordingly.
One nice thing about Kellis Park is its spacious layout. You can usually find a quiet corner away from others if you're looking for some peace and quiet with your thoughts or a good book.
Good to Know
As with all Fort Worth parks, standard rules apply - no littering, be kind to plants and wildlife, and respect the property. The Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department keeps things running smoothly here.
Dog lovers, rejoice! Your four-legged friends are welcome to join you for walks around the grounds. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM - plenty of time to enjoy this neighborhood space.
