Park Overview

Found on 7 acres of land, Dr. Charles B. McKissick Park provides a green space for the surrounding neighborhood. Sitting right next to Vega Elementary School, it's basically an extended backyard for local students and families who want a quick escape into nature.

The park strikes a nice balance between natural landscape and developed amenities - not too manicured, not too wild. It's one of those peaceful spots where you can actually hear yourself think, making it suitable for anyone looking for a bit of outdoor time, regardless of age.

Playground Fun

The barrier-free, shaded playground is definitely a highlight here. We love that it's accessible to kids of all abilities - something that's unfortunately still rare in many parks. There are swings too, because what's a playground without the simple joy of swinging?

The play equipment has gotten a recent upgrade with new structures that seem to be a hit with the little ones. While it's not one of those massive playground complexes you might find in destination parks, it's perfectly sized for younger kids to have a blast and burn off that endless energy they somehow possess.

If you're trying to keep up with your fitness goals, the 0.4-mile hike and bike trail offers a nice option for a quick workout. The walking track that loops around the park is especially convenient for those daily steps - no complicated route planning needed, just show up and start moving.

Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the baseball/softball backstop on the athletic field. The large open field is versatile enough for impromptu soccer games, football tosses, or whatever sport strikes your fancy. Just remember to bring your own equipment, as there are no rentals available.

The open green spaces here are well-suited for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a lazy afternoon. When lunchtime rolls around, head to the covered picnic shelter that works on a first-come basis (no reservations needed).

Even when Texas weather decides to be unpredictable, the sturdy picnic shelter provides good protection. There's plenty of room around it too, so your group won't feel cramped when gathering for birthdays or casual get-togethers.

Good to Know

You can park either at Vega Elementary School or find street parking nearby. One thing to note - there are no restrooms in the park, so plan accordingly if you're thinking of a longer visit.

The park welcomes early birds and night owls alike, with gates open from 6AM to 11PM daily. Whether you're going for a morning jog before work or taking an evening stroll to wind down, the park is available throughout the day.
