About the Location

Honoring Our Heroes

Situated in McKinney's Van Tuyl Plaza at Craig Ranch, Veterans Memorial Park spans a modest 1.67 acres, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in significance. This intimate space honors those who've served in our country's military.

At the heart of the park stands the Wall of Honor - a solemn monument inscribed with the names of Collin County's fallen service members. What began with 365 names at the park's dedication has grown to honor 435 veterans as of 2023. Each name etched in stone represents a service member who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Features

Day and night, an American flag waves steadily above the Wall of Honor, never lowered, never retired - a fitting symbol of the unwavering commitment shown by our veterans. Surrounding it, the flags of various armed service branches flutter in the Texas breeze, representing the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and other military divisions.

At the flagpole's base, a thoughtfully designed fountain feeds water to several Shumard Red Oak trees, each symbolizing a different branch of the Armed Services. The ribbon-like walkway winds through the park, offering a natural path for quiet contemplation as you move from one memorial feature to the next.

Visitor Experience

Though you'll only need about 10-15 minutes to explore the entire park, don't rush through it. Take a moment to sit on one of the benches, feel the weight of the names before you, and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that seems to exist apart from the busy world around it.

If you're visiting with children, this small park offers an excellent opportunity to spark conversations about service, sacrifice, and our nation's military history in a setting that's both accessible and meaningful.

History and Legacy

The park opened its gates on Veterans Day in 2011, a date chosen with clear purpose. Its full name - Cpl RD Foster Veterans Memorial Park - honors Ronnie "R.D." Foster, a Marine Corps veteran from McKinney who championed the creation of this memorial and served on the McKinney Armed Services Memorial Board.

On days like Veterans Day, the park transforms into a gathering place, hosting ceremonies that bring the community together in remembrance. These events bring together local residents to remember and honor military service members.
