About the Location
Get Your Game On
Spread across 6.8 acres, Fairchild Park is a serene area for sports enthusiasts in San Antonio. The park has 10 lighted outdoor tennis courts and 18 dedicated pickleball courts with permanent markings. The best part? They're completely free to use, attracting players whether you're just starting out or have been playing for years.
There's a really welcoming vibe on the pickleball courts, with regular players who are genuinely friendly if you're new to the scene. Fair warning though - swing by around 5-6 PM and you'll discover the courts at their busiest, but people are good about rotating to make sure everyone gets playtime.
The park also features a swimming pool, but it's currently closed for the 2025 summer season. When operational, it's a spacious and clean spot for a refreshing dip, complete with a deep end. Just remember to bring your own shade, as the pool area doesn't offer much cover from the Texas sun.
Beyond Racquet Sports
Not into tennis or pickleball? No problem. The park's open court area regularly transforms into a hub for street box lacrosse and roller hockey games. If you're into roller hockey, you might bump into the San Antonio Roller Hockey community, who frequently gather here for games.
Locals drop by regularly to stay active, making Fairchild feel like a genuine neighborhood fixture.
Family-Friendly Spaces
For those with little ones in tow, the park includes a small playground with equipment where kids can burn off some energy. While not the biggest playground in town, it gets the job done in a safe environment.
Fancy an outdoor meal? You'll come across picnic areas scattered throughout with tables and grills, many nestled under shady trees. These spots are excellent for relaxing with lunch while watching the action on the courts or simply enjoying some quiet time outdoors.
Practical Stuff
Getting here is straightforward with both standard and handicapped accessible parking that puts you right near the courts. When nature calls, you've got options - restrooms are located in two areas: the cleaner ones behind the office gate (only open during office hours) and the 24-hour accessible facilities outside.
The water fountains work well when you need to hydrate, but you might want to bring a chair if you plan to spectate, as seating is limited. Shade around the courts is also sparse, so a hat and sunscreen are good ideas. Dog owners, rejoice - your leashed furry friends are welcome across the park.
Good to Know
Just 1.25 miles from downtown San Antonio and the Alamo, Fairchild Park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to 11 PM. Keep in mind that alcohol isn't permitted in the park.
All facilities operate on a first-come, first-served basis. While you might notice some cracked surfaces here and there, the courts and amenities are generally well-maintained, providing San Antonians with space for outdoor recreation.
