About the Location
Location and History
Tucked away about 15 minutes south of Wichita Falls, Texas, Lake Arrowhead State Park sits peacefully off highways 281 and 287. Spanning 524 acres along the north shore of Lake Arrowhead, this natural getaway borders a massive 16,200-acre reservoir that primarily represents the water source for Wichita Falls and surrounding communities.
The park opened its gates in 1970 and calls the Rolling Plains region of Texas home. What was once part of a sweeping prairie has gradually transformed over the decades into the diverse landscape we see today.
Natural Environment
Honey mesquite trees now dominate the park's landscape, sharing space with cottonwoods, hackberries, and wild plums that dot the terrain. If you're interested in conservation efforts, you'll appreciate the ongoing prairie restoration project, which includes controlled burns to maintain the ecosystem's health and balance.
The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep your eyes peeled for white-tailed deer gracefully moving through the underbrush, or catch glimpses of coyotes and bobcats if you're lucky. Prairie dogs, rabbits, and armadillos are also common residents. Early mornings and evenings offer the best wildlife viewing opportunities - you might even hear the distant calls of coyotes as dusk settles over the plains.
Water Recreation
The lake is the centerpiece of the park's recreational offerings. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck catching crappie, bass, and catfish from the lighted fishing pier or from a boat launched from one of the park's multiple boat ramps. When you've reeled in your catch, head to the fish cleaning station to prepare your bounty. Good news for casual anglers - you don't need a fishing license when fishing from shore within the park boundaries.
Feel like taking a dip? The designated swimming area provides a refreshing escape from Texas heat, but there's no lifeguard on duty. The beach area is ideal for lounging, but keep in mind that the distinctive red/brown water might stain light-colored swimwear. For a different perspective of the lake, kayak rentals are available for paddling adventures.
Land Activities
On dry land, approximately five miles of multi-use trails wind through diverse terrain, well-suited for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Nature lovers can observe native plants and wildlife along these paths, with the Dragonfly Trail offering educational information about local trees along with blessed shade during hot summer days.
Disc golf enthusiasts will find a challenging course that puts their skills to the test. If you're visiting with kids, they'll enjoy the playgrounds conveniently located near the beach and picnic areas.
Camping and Facilities
The camping setup at Lake Arrowhead features RV sites arranged in small circles of 6-8 sites each, providing a nice balance of community and privacy. Many sites have been upgraded with level concrete pads, covered picnic tables, and fire rings - ideal for evening s'mores sessions.
You can find clean restrooms and shower facilities throughout the camping areas. Most sites offer water and electric hookups, but full hookups aren't available. If you're in an RV, there's a convenient dump station on site.
Traveling with horses? The park has you covered with equestrian camping sites that provide accommodations for both you and your four-legged companions.
Unique Features
In an interesting blend of nature and industry, the park houses a working oil pumpjack within its boundaries. This provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's energy production, but it's worth noting that some campers find the mechanical sounds disruptive, particularly at night.
When darkness falls, look up - the park offers wonderful stargazing opportunities thanks to minimal light pollution. On clear nights, the canopy of stars above makes for a breathtaking natural show that you just can't experience in the city.
