About the Location

The Heart of Fairpark

Positioned in Salt Lake City's west side, Madsen Park represents a small but meaningful green space within the Fairpark neighborhood. While beautiful mature trees dot the landscape, just be aware they don't provide complete shade coverage during those bright Utah summer days.

A Community's Gift

There's something special about knowing this park's origins. Back in June 1940, Richard Madsen donated this land after local parents expressed their desire for a safe place where their children could play. In true community spirit, residents rolled up their sleeves and built the first playground equipment themselves.

What You'll Find Today

Though modest in size, the park packs in several features for visitors of all ages. Kids can burn off energy at the playground, while teens and adults might enjoy shooting hoops at the basketball court.

Looking for a spot to relax? The open grassy areas are meant for throwing a frisbee or simply lounging with a good book. The picnic area makes a great spot for family lunches or casual get-togethers with friends.

If you're lucky, you might even catch some impromptu hockey practice happening - one of those charming, unplanned community uses that gives the park extra character.

Recent Challenges

Like many urban spaces, Madsen Park has faced its share of difficulties. In late 2021, safety concerns led to a temporary closure by the mayor's office due to increased crime in the area.

Since then, the city has been working on plans to breathe new life into this neighborhood space, hoping to make it more inviting for local families.

Looking Forward

There's reason for optimism about Madsen Park's future. The Salt Lake City Parks Division has been exploring modest improvements as part of their broader mission to enhance public green spaces throughout the city.

What's particularly encouraging is how they've sought community input to guide these potential upgrades, ensuring that any changes will actually reflect what the neighborhood wants and needs.
