About Alexandria African American Heritage Park
A Glimpse into History
Located in Alexandria, Virginia, the African American Heritage Park spans nine thoughtfully designed acres that tell the story of Black contributions to the city's rich tapestry. This space combines natural beauty with important historical significance.
At the heart of the park rests a one-acre 19th century African American burial ground, the Black Baptist Cemetery. Walking through this sacred space, you'll find six identified headstones still marking their original spots, silent witnesses to more than 20 known burials that took place here.
Artful Remembrance
You can't miss the park's centerpiece: "Truths That Rise From the Roots Remembered," a striking collection of bronze trees crafted by DC sculptor Jerome Meadows. These bronze trees represent the African Americans who contributed to Alexandria's development throughout its history.
As you wander the grounds, keep an eye out for smaller sculptures scattered throughout, each one honoring historic Black neighborhoods and individuals laid to rest here. The original cemetery landscape has been thoughtfully preserved within the park's design.
Nature's Sanctuary
The park's wetland area creates a surprising wildlife haven in the middle of the city. On a good day, you might spot mallards gliding across the water, painted turtles sunning themselves, industrious beavers, or even crayfish scuttling about. This natural area provides a peaceful backdrop to the memorial elements.
The well-maintained paths make for a lovely stroll, and many locals have made this part of their regular dog-walking routine. There's something calming about finding this pocket of nature amid the urban landscape.
Your Visit
The park combines educational elements with quiet spaces - allowing visitors to learn about Alexandria's African American history while enjoying a peaceful setting. The grounds are well-kept, creating an atmosphere conducive to quiet contemplation.
When you need a break, the immaculate picnic area provides a clean spot to rest or enjoy a packed lunch. The park effectively balances its historical focus with comfortable areas for relaxation.
A Living Legacy
Dedicated on June 17, 1995, this meaningful park emerged as part of the Carlyle Development and is a satellite location of the Alexandria Black History Museum. The park preserves history while offering a peaceful place to reflect on the contributions of African Americans to Alexandria's development over the centuries.
