Park Overview
Hume Springs Park is a small neighborhood park located in Alexandria, Virginia. The park covers 0.53 acres and sits within the Arlandria neighborhood between Dale and Reed Streets.
Originally part of the Hume Estate, the land was dedicated to the City of Alexandria in 1951 for public use.
Amenities
The park features a playground that is best suited for children ages 3-8 years old. It also contains picnic areas and walking paths for visitors to enjoy.
Historical Significance
Hume Springs Park has an interesting history, with two documented Civil War Union Camp sites located within its current boundaries. The 1st and 2nd Ohio Militia Camp was situated to the north, while the 1st and 3rd New Jersey Militia occupied the southern portion.
Archaeological evidence of these encampments may still be present in the park.
Recent Improvements
The park has undergone improvements over the years, including a renovation of the playground in 2015. This project was a partnership between the RunningBrooke non-profit organization and the City of Alexandria, aimed at enhancing the recreational facilities for local residents.
Community Involvement
Hume Springs Park is maintained by the City of Alexandria and has been adopted by the Hume Springs Citizens' Association, who help oversee its care and use. The park is open from 6AM to 7:30PM, providing a convenient outdoor space for the surrounding community.
