About the Location

A Place of Honor and Reflection

Positioned in Alexandria's West End, James Marx All Veterans Park offers a quiet retreat where history and nature blend seamlessly. This green space sits near the intersection of Pickett Street and Holmes Run Parkway, forming part of a series of parks that follow the curve of Holmes Run Stream.

At its heart, this park serves a special purpose - honoring those who served in our military. In 1994, the City Council officially renamed it James H. Marx All Veterans Memorial Park, cementing its role as a place of remembrance. You'll often find veterans here, taking a moment to themselves in this peaceful space dedicated to their service.

Natural Beauty Along the Run

A winding multi-use trail cuts through the park, hugging Holmes Run on the northern edge. The path is suitable for morning jogs, leisurely strolls, or bike rides - connecting to the broader Holmes Run trail system that extends beyond the park's boundaries.

One of our favorite spots here is the observation deck perched on the bank of Holmes Run. It offers a lovely vantage point to take in the surrounding greenery, including the majestic Bi-Centennial Tree standing tall across the stream. Nature lovers might get lucky and spot deer and other wildlife that call this urban oasis home.

Dog owners can use the dedicated exercise area running parallel to Pickett Street for walking their four-legged friends (just remember to keep them leashed).

There are plenty of shaded areas and benches throughout the landscape, providing spots to rest, read a book, or simply watch the world go by.

Practical Amenities

Planning a small gathering? The park features a picnic area complete with tables, a sun shade, and a charcoal grill. The abundance of shade trees keeps things comfortable even when the summer sun is beating down.

Parking is available, but it can fill up during busy hours. If you find the lot full, the nearby library offers additional parking options just a short walk away.

Community Connections

It's worth noting that Alexandria Firefighters Inc. has adopted this park, showing the local community's commitment to keeping this space beautiful and well-maintained.

James Marx All Veterans Park functions as a memorial, a nature area, and a community space. While you might still hear the distant hum of the city, the park offers a relatively quiet spot away from the bustle of Alexandria.
