About the Location
Natural Beauty
Situated on Old Telegraph Road in Alexandria, Virginia, Kingstowne Park spans a generous 76.9 acres of mostly undisturbed natural landscape. This hidden green is jointly managed by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Board of Supervisors, sitting within the Rose Hill Planning District and Lee Supervisory District.
About two-thirds of the park serves an important ecological purpose - dedicated to wetlands mitigation and stormwater management. The park features three distinct wetlands areas and two wet ponds that help maintain the local ecosystem's balance.
A Forest Treasure
What makes Kingstowne Park truly special is a 10-acre section along its western edge. This area preserves side slope and riparian forest communities, representing one of eastern Fairfax County's finest remaining examples of native coastal plain forest.
Walk through this area and you'll encounter an impressive diversity of native trees and plants. Majestic white oaks and chestnut oaks tower overhead, while tulip trees add splashes of color. At ground level, maple-leaved viburnum and various fern species create a lush understory that changes with the seasons.
Getting Outdoors
If you're looking to explore, head to the northwest corner where you'll find a simple stone dust trail and a small picnic area maintained by the Park Authority - excellent for a quiet afternoon in nature.
Beyond the official trail, locals have created a network of informal paths across the park that see regular use. There's good news for trail enthusiasts too - the Park Authority has proposed plans to maintain or upgrade these existing trails while preserving the park's natural character.
Looking Forward
The community has made it clear they value Kingstowne Park's natural state. Local input has consistently emphasized keeping the park as wild as possible, while thoughtfully improving trail access and replacing an aging dam structure.
