About the Location
History and Background
Found in the West End of Alexandria, Virginia, Ben Brenman Park sprawls across 59 peaceful acres where the U.S. Army's Cameron Station once stood before its decommissioning in the late 1980s.
The park bears the name of Colonel Ben Brenman, a dedicated community activist whose passion for Alexandria helped secure this land for public use. Today, it's the heart and soul of the Cameron Station neighborhood and surrounding communities - a place where locals gather, play, and unwind.
Natural Features
At the center of the park sits a small lake that's quite picturesque. A winding path hugs its perimeter, great for contemplative walks and wildlife watching. The lake features a fountain that adds a touch of tranquility, while wooden frames serve as resting spots for local waterfowl.
The park is home to various wildlife - turtles sunbathing, fish swimming in the water, and ducks and geese throughout the area. You can observe these creatures from bridges spanning the lake or take a seat on one of the many benches along the shore. If you visit in spring, the cherry blossom trees bloom beautifully, offering a less crowded alternative to the DC viewing spots.
Sports and Recreation
Active types will appreciate the variety of athletic fields here. The synthetic turf rectangular field is great for soccer and similar sports, while the baseball and softball fields cater to America's favorite pastime. Thanks to field lighting, the fun doesn't have to end when the sun goes down. Alexandria's soccer team plays their home games here.
For families, there's a fenced playground complete with swings and jungle gym equipment where kids can climb, swing, and make new friends in a safe environment. Beach volleyball enthusiasts can bump, set, and spike at the volleyball courts near the picnic area.
The park includes a fenced dog area set away from the main grounds where dogs can run off-leash, play fetch, and socialize with other dogs.
Amenities and Facilities
If relaxation is more your speed, settle into one of the picnic areas equipped with tables and grills - meant for everything from family lunches to birthday celebrations. Need more space? The large pavilion accommodates up to 40 people, with nearby grills and plenty of room for activities.
Clean restroom facilities near the soccer field make it easy to spend a full day exploring the park. The amphitheater adds cultural flair as a venue for performances and community gatherings, occasionally hosting impromptu drum circles that fill the air with rhythm.
Ben Brenman Park connects seamlessly to the broader Alexandria landscape through walking and bicycle trails that link to the city's trail network, including Holmes Run Park stretching from South Van Dorn Street to Eisenhower Avenue and into Old Town. Plenty of parking and nearby public transportation make getting here a breeze.
Community Events
The park really comes alive during its various community events. The popular farmers' market runs Sundays from May through November, where you can browse stalls of fresh produce, handmade crafts, and local goods.
With its gently rolling hills, open spaces, and scenery, the park is popular for photographers, family outings, and neighborhood get-togethers. Nearby options include a coffee shop and several restaurants, including an Asian eatery, if you need refreshments after your visit.
