About Shirley Tyler Unity Park
A Piece of Alexandria History
Situated on Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria, Shirley Tyler Unity Park acts as a cherished gathering spot for the local community. In 2021, this neighborhood green space was renamed to honor Shirley Tyler - a remarkable woman whose leadership and dedication shaped Alexandria for over four decades.
The park sits in the heart of the Arlandria neighborhood, where Tyler and her family made history in 1965 as the area's first African American homeowners. Tyler wasn't just a resident though - she became deeply woven into Alexandria's fabric, serving on the School Board and breaking barriers as its first African American female chairperson.
What You'll Find at the Park
Size-wise, this park falls somewhere between a basketball court and a football field - not huge, but plenty of room to breathe amid the urban landscape. It's a practical space where you can spread out a blanket for picnicking or fire up one of the grills for a weekend barbecue with friends and family.
One of the park's highlights is its community garden, where neighbors transform small plots of earth into flourishing gardens. It's a wonderful way for residents to grow their own produce while building connections with fellow gardeners.
ADBrian Curry: Mentalist and Magician Live at The Capital Hilton
Expect a fast-paced, 65-minute performance packed with mind reading, impossible predictions, and quick-witted comedy. From the moment Brian Curry takes the stage, the crowd becomes part of the show—whether he’s calling out your thoughts, toying with your instincts, or turning a skeptical guest into the star of the night.
Plan Your Visit
The park welcomes visitors daily from sunrise to sunset, offering a peaceful retreat for morning joggers, afternoon picnickers, or anyone looking for a moment of greenery in their day.
