About the Location

Breathtaking City Views

Perched atop Union Hill, one of Richmond's seven hills, Jefferson Park provides panoramic views of the city. From up here, you can take in the Richmond skyline and the winding James River below.

Dating back to the late 19th century, this park has become a favorite spot for locals looking to escape the hustle without actually leaving the city. If you visit at sunset, the light across downtown Richmond and Shockoe Bottom is particularly nice. And even on those sticky Virginia summer days, the hilltop location catches just enough breeze to keep things comfortable.

What You'll Find Here

Take a stroll around the walking path that circles the park, where benches are placed at various viewpoints. The grounds are well-kept, with enough green space to spread out and relax.

The Peace Fountain is named after Alice Raisin, who was known as Richmond's "Ambassador of Compassion."

There's a covered shelter area that provides some welcome shade, but picnic tables are limited. Many park-goers simply bring blankets and claim a spot on the grass instead, which honestly might be the better move anyway.

Fun for Everyone

Jefferson Park features two separate playgrounds that cater to different age groups. The smaller one includes infant swings for the tiny adventurers, while older children can challenge themselves on more complex equipment at the second playground.

For the fitness enthusiasts, check out the outdoor exercise stations along the lower path. These create a workout circuit where you can do strength training while enjoying fresh air and views.

And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome here too. The open layout is well-suited for dogs, and there are plenty of waste stations throughout, making it easy to clean up after your pup.

Community Heart

The park has a strong community backbone in the Friends of Jefferson Park group, who coordinate an annual spring workday with local volunteers. It's this kind of neighborhood involvement that's helped transform the space over the years while preserving what makes it special.

The Secret Below

Here's something you might not know: beneath your feet lies a fascinating piece of Richmond history. The sealed Church Hill train tunnel runs below the park - the site of a tragic 1925 collapse that trapped a steam locomotive and several workers during repair work.

Despite rescue attempts, some remains and the train engine still rest beneath the park today. It's a sobering historical footnote that adds an unexpected layer of depth to this beautiful community space.
