About the Location
Natural Setting
Nestled along the James River in Richmond, Virginia, Texas Beach is a bit of a misnomer - it's not your typical sandy stretch, but rather a rocky shoreline with pockets of sand, all part of the James River Park System. You'll find this peaceful escape south of Maymont and west of Hollywood Cemetery, accessible from Texas Avenue in the Maymont neighborhood.
The spot feels like an urban wilderness, with tall trees creating a natural canopy that makes you forget you're still within city limits. The transition from downtown Richmond to feeling completely immersed in nature happens surprisingly quickly.
Trails and Access
A 4.8-mile hiking trail meanders alongside the river, connecting visitors to secluded sandy beaches, perfect sunbathing rocks, and peaceful shady retreats. The path has character - narrow in spots, root-covered in others, with charming wooden boardwalks crossing wetland areas.
Fair warning: this isn't a leisurely stroll type of place. The terrain demands sturdy footwear and good balance as you'll navigate uneven, rocky paths. The granite stones (about hand-sized) can be tricky to walk on, making this spot challenging if you have mobility issues. If you have knee, hip, or back problems or use mobility aids, you might want to choose another park for your outdoor adventure.
Note that the main access bridge has been closed, which has made reaching the beach more challenging. Alternative routes exist, but they're more demanding and not clearly marked.
Water Activities
The real draw of Texas Beach is its water access - calm areas and shallow rapids make it one of the safest entry points to the James River in Richmond. During warmer months, the river becomes a natural playground for swimming, wading, and even snorkeling.
The shoreline offers multiple entry points where you can ease into the water, with sandy patches ideal for setting up a temporary home base. Locals love to sunbathe on the flat rocks, take refreshing dips, or simply sit by the water with a good book.
Historical Elements
While enjoying the natural beauty, you'll also encounter pieces of Richmond's past. The ruins of Foushee Mill, built in 1819 by Dr. William Foushee, sit directly south of Maymont, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your outdoor experience.
As you explore the trails, you'll come across various old structures and bridges - silent storytellers of the area's industrial history that add an element of discovery to your hike.
Wildlife and Nature
The park is a habitat for diverse wildlife, including several snake species (something to be aware of, but not afraid of). The well-preserved natural environment provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing year-round. Keep your eyes open for native birds, small mammals, and the occasional river wildlife that call this ecosystem home.
Visitor Information
A free parking lot awaits at the trailhead, along with a porta-potty for when nature calls in more ways than one. Dog lovers will appreciate that four-legged friends are welcome, however you'll need to keep them under control on the trails.
Texas Beach has become a favorite local hangout for relaxation, family walks, and casual gatherings. Some visitors bring portable speakers for background music and pack light picnics, however you won't find formal picnic tables here. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 8PM, offering a beautiful touch of natural tranquility right in Richmond's backyard.
