About the Location
Historic Estate
Nestled in the heart of Richmond, Virginia, Maymont spans a gorgeous 100 acres of historic estate and public parkland. Once the Gilded Age residence of James and Sallie Dooley, this estate was bequeathed to Richmond after their passing in the 1920s, opening to the public in 1926. While you can wander the grounds completely free of charge, some of the special attractions might have a small fee - just a heads-up!
Maymont Mansion
At the heart of Maymont stands the impressive 33-room Maymont Mansion, a Romanesque Revival masterpiece completed in 1893. Now representing a historic house museum, the mansion offers a glimpse into the opulent Gilded Age lifestyle, with much of its original furnishings still intact. The Tiffany stained glass windows are notable - the light filtering through them creates a striking atmosphere. Occasionally, the mansion undergoes careful renovations to preserve its historic character for future generations.
Beautiful Gardens
The mansion is surrounded by well-maintained gardens with distinctive character. The Japanese Garden is a peaceful retreat featuring a koi pond where colorful fish dart beneath the surface, a gentle waterfall providing background music, and stepping stones that invite you to cross the water. The winding paths guide you through seasonal displays of nature's beauty.
Over in the Italian Garden, classical statuary stands amid elegant fountains, with a pergola offering shade on sunny days. The formal design evokes the feeling of being transported to the Mediterranean. These gardens aren't just gorgeous spaces - they're also popular backdrops for weddings and photographers seeking that perfect shot.
Plant enthusiasts will appreciate the arboretum housing over 200 species of trees and woody plants from across the globe, including some remarkable specimens that made their way all the way from Asia.
Wildlife Exhibits
Nature lovers will find plenty to enjoy in Maymont's wildlife areas. The nature center focuses on the James River ecosystem, while the Robins Nature Center offers hands-on exhibits that kids find fascinating while learning about local habitats. You can observe native Virginia wildlife like black bears, bison, elk, deer, and birds of prey living in thoughtfully designed naturalistic environments.
The Children's Farm is a hit with families, allowing for up-close encounters with farm animals like goats, pigs, and horses. As you explore the grounds, keep your eyes peeled for wild geese, turtles, herons, and other creatures that call Maymont home.
Recreation and Activities
The spacious grounds provide plenty of room to stretch your legs and enjoy the outdoors. Bring a blanket and pack a lunch - the open grassy areas make for ideal picnic spots surrounded by nature's beauty. Walking trails meander through varied landscapes, offering everything from easy, leisurely strolls to more invigorating routes with some hills to tackle.
If you're visiting with kids, the children's garden and playground features whimsical structures and interactive exhibits designed for various ages, giving the little ones space to play and discover.
Programs and Events
During the year, Maymont hosts educational programs, guided tours, and special events that bring the property to life. One highlight is the enchanting Garden Glow in the fall, when the Japanese Garden transforms with colorful lights and interactive illuminations that cast the familiar landscape in an entirely new perspective.
Maymont is both a natural retreat and a cultural landmark that preserves an important chapter of Richmond's history. You can spend an hour or an entire day here and still discover new elements with each visit.
