About the Location
A Neighborhood Retreat
Tucked away in Richmond's residential landscape, Westwood Park is a small yet charming green space that represents the neighborhood's breathing room. The land has historical significance as part of a community established by formerly enslaved African Americans in the post-Civil War era.
Many locals consider this park a "tranquil space," and we can see why. There's a genuine sense of calm about this modest space that many find welcoming.
What You'll Find
If you're bringing little ones, they'll find a suitable play area here. The park features a playground area that's perfectly sized for children between 3-10 years old. The equipment is appropriately scaled for smaller children.
The play area comes equipped with four swings and slides, plus two compact play structures where kids can climb and explore. Just a heads-up: the playground has a woodchip surface that can get a bit mushy after rain, so maybe skip a visit right after a downpour.
Need to take a break? Several picnic tables are scattered throughout shaded areas, giving you a comfortable spot to relax while keeping an eye on playing children. These seating areas allow for easy supervision of children at play.
Natural Beauty
The park features a natural canopy of tall trees that provide ample shade. This shade is especially welcome during Richmond's warmer months.
Beyond the playground, you'll find a generous open grassy area - fantastic for impromptu games of tag, tossing a frisbee, or simply letting energetic kids burn off some steam. While not massive, this green space provides a welcome patch of nature within the urban neighborhood setting.
Good to Know
The park sits in a convenient location for nearby residents and maintains a safe atmosphere for families and dog-walkers alike. If you bring your four-legged friend, remember they should stay on a leash.
One important note: there are no public restrooms available here, so plan accordingly.
A Piece of History
Walking through Westwood Park, you're treading on ground with significant historical importance. The Westwood neighborhood developed as a self-sustaining African American community in the late 1800s, creating its own identity after the Civil War. Today, this modest park continues that community tradition, preserving both open space and a piece of Richmond's rich cultural heritage.
