About Pleasure House Point Natural Area

Coastal Haven by the Lynnhaven

Tucked along the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach sits Pleasure House Point Natural Area, a 118-acre piece of coastal wilderness that feels worlds away from the nearby suburban bustle. This hidden retreat preserves one of the largest undeveloped parcels remaining on the Lynnhaven, offering a quiet escape where nature remains relatively undisturbed.

With roughly a mile of shoreline hugging both the Lynnhaven River and Pleasure House Creek, this tranquil sanctuary blends tidal marshes, sandy shorelines, and maritime forest into one peaceful package. Here you can enjoy water views and natural landscapes that haven't changed much over generations.

Wildlife Encounters

Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot herons gracefully stalking the shallows or egrets flashing their brilliant white plumage against the marsh greens. Ospreys often circle overhead, while various shorebirds dart along the water's edge all year long.

The tidal wetlands serve as underwater nurseries for fish, crabs, and other marine creatures. You might occasionally see dolphins breaking the water's surface, or spot one of the area's resident diamond back terrapins sunning themselves. Birdwatchers, bring your binoculars - the occasional bald eagle has been known to make an appearance here.

Trails to Wander

Three sandy paths invite exploration throughout the preserve. The main Beach Trail winds its way to a small, quiet beach area at the eastern end. The trails maintain a gentle, mostly flat profile, making them accessible for most visitors, although it's worth noting that some sections can become soggy during high tides.

Many locals come here to fish in the designated spots around the wetlands. Dog owners appreciate the pet-friendly policy (leashes required, of course), and the wide paths provide plenty of room for four-legged companions.

The preserve welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 6PM. Evening visits before closing offer nice sunset views across the water.

What to Know Before You Go

Free street parking is available near the preserve entrances. If you're planning a picnic, head to the Brock Environmental Center where tables are available both under and on top of the deck.

Just note that public restrooms are only accessible when the Brock Environmental Center is open. Some sections of the trails offer limited shade, so on sunny days, don't forget your sunscreen and water bottle.

A Conservation Success Story

The preservation of this coastal habitat didn't happen by accident. In 2012, a community-driven conservation effort involving local residents, environmental groups, the City of Virginia Beach, and other partners succeeded in permanently protecting this special place.

Adjacent to the natural area stands the Brock Environmental Center, an impressively eco-friendly education facility run by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The center spearheads educational programs and provides information about local conservation initiatives, including efforts to restore the bay's once-abundant oyster populations.

As you walk the trails, you'll notice interpretive signs that help bring the area's ecological story and history to life.

Learning in Nature's Classroom

Both the preserve and the Brock Center offer rich educational experiences for curious minds. You can discover sustainable environmental practices, learn about oyster restoration projects, and gain insight into broader Chesapeake Bay conservation efforts.

The center itself is a living example of sustainability, featuring wind turbines that generate renewable energy for the facility. No matter if you're a dedicated environmentalist or simply enjoy connecting with natural spaces, this coastal sanctuary provides a firsthand look at coastal ecosystems and what it takes to protect them for future generations.
