About Pleasure House Point Natural Area in Virginia Beach
Pleasure House Point Natural Area is a 118-acre preserve located along the Lynnhaven River in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The natural area contains a mix of tidal marsh, sandy shores, and maritime forest habitats. It preserves one of the largest undeveloped parcels of land remaining on the Lynnhaven River.
The site includes approximately 1 mile of shoreline along the Lynnhaven River and Pleasure House Creek. Its varied habitats provide important breeding, migrating, and wintering areas for many bird species. Visitors may observe herons, egrets, osprey, and various shorebirds and waterfowl throughout the seasons. The tidal wetlands also serve as nursery grounds for fish, crabs, and other marine life.
Three sandy trails allow visitors to explore the natural area and enjoy views of the marsh and waterways. The main Beach Trail leads to a small beach area at the eastern end of the preserve. The property is open daily from dawn to dusk for passive recreational activities like hiking, bird watching, and nature photography.
Pleasure House Point was permanently protected through a community conservation effort in 2012 involving local residents, conservation groups, the City of Virginia Beach, and other partners. The Brock Environmental Center, an eco-friendly education facility operated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, is located adjacent to the natural area.
