About the Location
Location and Views
Positioned on Alverson Boulevard on the north side of Everett, American Legion Memorial Park (or simply Legion Park to locals) is a 4.0-acre green space that's something of a secluded place in Snohomish County. What really makes this park special? The absolutely stunning panoramic views that sweep across Port Gardner Bay, Gedney (Hat) Island, Whidbey Island, and Camano Island.
Old shade trees create a peaceful canopy while spacious lawns invite you to spread out a blanket and relax. If you time your visit right - particularly around sunset - you're in for a real treat. On clear days, the Olympic Mountains rise majestically across the sound, creating a backdrop that honestly makes even mediocre smartphone photos look frame-worthy.
Park Layout
A road cuts through the park, creating two distinct areas with their own character. The western half is mostly open grassy spaces with benches perfectly positioned for those water views, while the eastern section houses most of the recreational facilities. Even when the park gets busy (hello, summer weekends), there's enough space that you never feel like you're on top of other visitors.
There's plenty of parking throughout, but keep in mind you can't leave your car overnight, and they do enforce parking restrictions after dark.
Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens
Perhaps the crown jewel of Legion Park is the Evergreen Arboretum and Gardens on the west end. Since opening in 1963, this 2.4-acre botanical wonderland has evolved to include ten themed gardens, each with its own personality and plant collection. It's all maintained by dedicated volunteers who clearly have greener thumbs than most of us.
If you're a serious plant enthusiast or just someone who appreciates pretty flowers, the arboretum offers year-round interest. Winter brings magical holiday light displays, while spring and summer showcase a rotating palette of blooms that make for a peaceful walking experience.
Historical Significance
The park isn't just pretty - it's meaningful too. In 2014, the northwestern viewpoint was renamed Hibulb Lookout, honoring the former Snohomish village that once thrived nearby.
Take a moment to read the interpretive signs scattered across the park to learn about Hibulb Village, which served as the Snohomish People's main winter home for centuries. It was essentially the social and commercial hub of the area long before modern Everett existed.
Recreational Facilities
For the active visitors, Legion Park doesn't disappoint. Kids can burn off energy at the well-maintained playground that features everything from slides and swings to climbing structures. There's even a front-end loader toy where little ones can scoop and dump bark to their heart's content.
Sports options abound with baseball fields, tennis courts, a basketball court, and even a pickleball court for those embracing America's fastest-growing sport. The open lawns work perfectly for impromptu frisbee games, kite flying, or just sprawling out with a good book.
Amenities
The practical stuff is covered too. You can find clean restrooms and a covered picnic shelter complete with tables and a working sink that you can reserve for gatherings. Around the park, additional picnic tables dot the landscape, many nestled under the shade of mature trees.
BBQ grills make this an ideal spot for everything from family reunions to birthday celebrations. Parents will appreciate how the picnic shelter sits close enough to the playground that you can keep an eye on the kids while still enjoying adult conversation.
Activities
Legion Park has a way of accommodating whatever mood you're in. Come for a peaceful solo sunset watch, a romantic picnic, a family playdate, or a full-on birthday bash - it all works here.
The park really comes alive during annual events, with Fourth of July being a particular highlight. Imagine watching fireworks reflect over the water while you're comfortably settled on your blanket with snacks in hand.
With its blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and practical amenities, American Legion Memorial Park functions as both a peaceful retreat and a community gathering space for Everett residents and visitors throughout the seasons.
