About A. B. Ernst Park

History and Namesake

A. B. Ernst Park honors Ambrose Ernst, who earned the nickname "Father of City Playfields" during his tenure on the Board of Park Commissioners from 1906 to 1913. The park sits in Seattle's vibrant Fremont neighborhood, constructed on a steep slope that works with the challenging terrain. Small in size but packed with character, it's a hillside green space that carries some real civic history.

Design Features

What makes this park special is its spiraling path made of water-permeable concrete that gently winds down the hillside. Park designer Lynn Thompson cleverly incorporated artful garden-bed walls along this path that double as casual seating spots - meant for when you need a moment to catch your breath or just enjoy the surroundings.

Follow the spiral all the way down and you'll discover a cozy amphitheater nestled at the bottom. From there, a stairway continues the journey down to N 34th Street. Despite the park's compact footprint, there's seating space for 150 to 200 people, suitable for small community gatherings.

Accessibility and Connections

A. B. Ernst Park really shines in how it connects the neighborhood. You can find wheelchair access to the community room of the adjacent Fremont Library, a historic Carnegie library that's worth checking out while you're in the area.

The park also is a pleasant pedestrian pathway linking the library, Fremont's bustling commercial core, and the nearby residential areas - making it both beautiful and practical.

Landscaping

The sloped garden beds feature barberry and various sustainable native plants, creating a low-maintenance but visually interesting landscape that changes with the seasons.

Recent Expansion

In December 2010, the park got a little bigger when Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased a vacant 0.10-acre lot just to the west. The community had a say in designing this new section, which now includes a small slide for the kids, additional pathways to explore, a gathering area for neighbors to connect, and thoughtful landscaping complete with irrigation to keep everything looking fresh.
