About the Location
A Glimpse into Seattle's Past
Positioned in the base of Queen Anne, Ward Springs Park sits quietly at the corner of 4th Avenue North and Ward Street. This pocket-sized green space (just 0.34 acres) might be small, but since its establishment in 2002, it's become a cherished neighborhood green.
The park's star historical attraction? The brick pump house that once kept Queen Anne residents from going thirsty. This little building pumped a whopping 80,000 gallons of water daily up the hill. Though no longer in service, you can still check out parts of the original pumping mechanism on display - a cool little window into Seattle's infrastructure history.
What You'll Find
A curved pathway meanders through the park, connecting its various features. You'll pass a play area, an open lawn excellent for stretching out with a book, and a dry streambed that adds a touch of natural character.
Perhaps the most Instagram-worthy feature is the breathtaking view of Seattle's skyline. From here, the Space Needle stands proud against downtown's backdrop. If you're looking for a less crowded spot to watch fireworks over the city, this hillside perch is hard to beat.
Kid-Friendly Fun
If you've got little ones between 3-8 years old, they'll feel right at home in the playground area. The well-maintained play equipment includes a charming playhouse, swings for those who love the feeling of flight, and slides for the speed demons.
There's also a small sandbox complete with toys - no need to bring your own buckets and shovels. The whole play area is kept clean and in good repair, making it a hit with neighborhood families.
The Ward Springs Experience
Despite being so close to downtown, there's something tranquil about this hillside haven. The park welcomes four-legged friends too, with plenty of locals bringing their dogs for quick outings.
If you're looking for somewhere to enjoy a peaceful lunch break with a view, or just need a quiet moment of green space amid the urban hustle, Ward Springs is a good option. The well-maintained grounds make it inviting no matter when you visit.
The skyline views alone make it worth the trip, offering a quieter alternative to Seattle's more tourist-heavy lookout spots. On special occasions when the city puts on a show, you'll have a front-row seat without the crowds.
