About the Location
History and Origins
This little touch of Seattle started its journey as homestead land belonging to Nils Peterson, before real estate broker Benjamin Franklin "B.F." Day scooped it up and gifted it to the City of Seattle in 1883.
Originally called Evergreen Park (a fitting name for its gorgeous grove of evergreens), it was renamed David Rodgers Park in 1919 to honor the freshly retired manager of Skinner & Eddy Corporation, a local shipbuilding company.
Park Features
Spanning 9.2 acres in Seattle's charming Queen Anne neighborhood, this park hugs the north slope of Queen Anne Hill, offering a wonderful mix of carefully landscaped spaces and more wild, natural areas.
The park's distinctive steeply sculptured hillside is laced with winding paths connecting the manicured upper section to the Queen Anne Bowl below. This design allows for both well-maintained park spaces and areas that feel a bit more natural.
The space naturally divides into four main areas: the upper section (home to tennis courts and a playground), the wooded hillside trails, and the lower section featuring a track and soccer field. Just be careful on those paths when it's wet - they can be quite steep and slippery!
Recreation Areas
At the bottom of the park, the Queen Anne Bowl houses a track and soccer field where local youth sports teams practice and play. You'll often spot soccer and lacrosse games here, along with dedicated joggers making their daily rounds.
The tennis courts in the upper section were recently resurfaced and are frequently used by tennis enthusiasts and coaches. If you're planning a game, consider making a reservation - these courts fill up fast.
Around the park, you'll discover generous open grassy areas ideal for tossing a frisbee, kicking a ball around, or simply spreading out a blanket for a leisurely picnic. There's ample space to play or relax in the sunshine.
Playground
The play area was completely renovated in 2019 with nature-themed play equipment that offers both educational and recreational value.
The playground includes accessible features for children of all abilities. From swings and slides to monkey bars, a merry-go-round, and various climbing structures - there's something here for every kid, whether they're toddling or tweening.
Amenities
Several picnic tables and benches are scattered near the playground, making it easy to keep an eye on the kids while enjoying a packed lunch or coffee break.
Restroom facilities are available and kept clean for park visitors.
Thanks to the abundant trees and wooded sections, the park offers welcome shade, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when the sun is at its strongest.
Dog-Friendly Features
While not officially designated as an off-leash area, the park is a favorite among local dog owners. You'll notice many furry friends enjoying the space, especially in the early mornings when leash rules tend to be more... flexibly observed.
The hillside and wooded areas provide interesting terrain for dog walks, with plenty of natural scents and features for your four-legged friend to investigate.
Seasonal Activities
When Seattle sees those rare snow days, the park's hillside transforms into a popular sledding spot, bringing neighborhood families together for some winter fun.
Visitor Experience
David Rodgers Park has earned a reputation as a peaceful retreat, making it a beloved spot for local residents seeking a quiet moment away from the city buzz.
As a bonus, parts of the park offer some stunning panoramic views of surrounding mountains and water. Whether you have just twenty minutes or a whole afternoon to spare, this versatile space welcomes you with its diverse areas and thoughtful amenities.
