Denny Blaine Lake Park

About the Location
Peaceful Lakeside Escape
Found in Seattle's Denny-Blaine neighborhood, this little 2-acre site sits right on Lake Washington's western shore. Despite its small size, the park offers lovely views - you can see across the water to Bellevue and, on clear days, spot Mount Rainier in the distance.
A Touch of Seattle History
The park has been around since 1901, originally christened "Minerva Fountain" when it was part of the Denny-Blaine Lake Park Addition to Seattle. It's one of five small parks donated by the Denny-Blaine Land Company, a real estate venture run by Elbert F. Blaine and Charles L. Denny (mystery solved on the park's name!).
Three Levels of Lakeside Loveliness
The park unfolds in three distinct tiers. The top level sits between the parking area and the original seawall - a grassy spot shaded by mature trees ideal for escaping the summer heat. The middle section offers more lawn space extending down to the beach. At the bottom, you'll come across a sandy beach that transitions to a smooth river pebble shoreline as it meets the lake.
Traces of the Past
An interesting feature here is the old stone wall that marked the original shoreline before 1917. It's a fascinating reminder of Seattle's engineering past - the lake level dropped nine feet when the Lake Washington Ship Canal was constructed. History you can actually touch!
A Welcoming Space
Since the 1970s, the park has evolved into an unofficial clothing-optional beach, becoming particularly meaningful to the LGBTQ+ community. Over the years, it's developed into a safe, queer- and trans-friendly environment where people find community and acceptance.
Simple Pleasures
Don't expect flashy amenities here - the park's charm lies in its simplicity. It's ideal for picnicking, sunbathing, and taking refreshing dips in the lake. The intimate size and neighborhood feel make this a wonderful spot to decompress and enjoy Seattle's natural beauty without the crowds of larger parks.
