About the Location

A Green Retreat in Fremont

Tucked away in Seattle's quirky Fremont neighborhood, Troll's Knoll Park offers a refreshing 2-acre escape from the urban hustle. This little green haven sits just steps from the Fremont Troll sculpture - that massive concrete figure lurking under the Aurora Avenue Bridge that's become something of a local celebrity. It's a popular spot for photos and considered a quintessential Seattle sight.

The park blends patches of urban forest with open areas in a thoughtful design that balances community needs with environmental consciousness. It's not a sprawling space, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in character.

Getting Around & What's There

One of the cool things about this park is how it connects different parts of Fremont. You can easily walk from here to bus stops or explore the growing northern Fremont business district. There are open lawns that work well for casual picnics. Or just grab a seat and take in the neighborhood views - sometimes it's nice to just sit and watch the world go by.

Fair warning about parking - it can be a bit tricky. Your best bet is finding street parking nearby, perhaps around the Seattle fire station on Linden Avenue N, then following the paths to the park. If you're up for a longer stroll, Gas Works Park isn't too far away either.

The park's hillside position creates some interesting terrain and gives you some nice perspectives of the surrounding area. Connected to the park is the Troll's Knoll P-Patch, where locals tend their garden plots, growing everything from practical veggies to colorful blooms.

Art That Makes You Look Twice

The undeniable star of the show is the Fremont Troll, a massive sculpture clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle in its giant hand. Kids especially get a kick out of spotting the car in the troll's grip. It's the kind of weird, wonderful public art that makes Seattle... well, Seattle.

If you look carefully while exploring the park, you might also discover a turtle sculpture hiding among the greenery. These artistic touches give the place a whimsical feel that perfectly captures Fremont's creative spirit.

Natural Elements

The urban agriculture elements are an interesting feature of the park. For many visitors, the beautiful gardens are actually the highlight of Troll's Knoll - offering a surprisingly lush retreat within the city limits.

The thoughtful landscaping features native plants and trees that support local wildlife and add to Seattle's biodiversity. You'll notice how the entire park is designed with sustainability in mind, including features that help manage rainwater runoff - something we certainly have plenty of in the Pacific Northwest. These elements contribute to the park's role as a green space in the neighborhood.
