About the Location

Park Overview

Positioned in eastern Spokane Valley, Greenacres Park spans a welcoming 8.3 acres right next to Riverbend Elementary School. Completed in 2012, it's actually a bit of a local milestone - the first new park created after Spokane Valley officially became a city in 2003.

The land was scooped up back in 2007 for just under $500,000, with Washington's Recreation and Conservation Office (formerly the Interagency Committee) pitching in half the cost. This investment has transformed the area into a popular local park.

Amenities and Features

The park's initial phase wrapped up in 2012 with a $1.4 million investment that brought some charming features to life - including a farm-themed playground area, a refreshing splash pad, a casual amphitheater, and a spacious 40'x60' shelter with a stage for community events.

The generous open green space works well for tossing a frisbee, kicking a ball around, or simply lounging on a blanket. Disc golf enthusiasts can navigate the 9-hole course that meanders through the grounds (though heads up - some baskets might be temporarily removed for maintenance).

The walking paths connect the different areas nicely, making for a pleasant stroll around the park, though you might find a few spots where connectivity between amenities could be improved.

Playground and Water Features

The littles will likely make a beeline for the farm-themed playground, which is especially great for kids under 8. It's equipped with all the classics: swings, a jungle gym, climbing wall, fire pole, and a sandpit for budding architects. Keep an eye out for the Ferdinand statue - a sweet nod to the character from that cherished children's book.

When temperatures climb, the splash pad becomes the park's hotspot. While not massive, it offers just enough watery fun to keep small children entertained and cool on those hot Washington days.

Picnic and Gathering Areas

The park offers a large covered shelter in the field area and a smaller shelter positioned near the playground, both good options for get-togethers. Both spots come with picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or host a birthday celebration.

The grilling area allows visitors to cook burgers and hot dogs for outdoor meals. With plenty of open space surrounding these areas, there's no shortage of room for games of tag or tossing a football around.

Restrooms and Facilities

You should note that the park offers seasonal restrooms that typically open in mid-April and close up shop in October. The cleanliness can be hit or miss depending on when you visit and how recently they've been serviced.

Art and Culture

In 2023, the park got an artistic upgrade with the installation of "Huckleberry Daze" - a piece created by artist Jerry McKeller and generously donated by the Spokane Valley Arts Council. It's a nice touch that adds character and a sense of place to the grounds.

Pet Policies

Dog owners, rejoice! While not specifically designed as a dog park, Greenacres is pet-friendly, but your four-legged friends need to stay leashed. You'll find waste bag stations throughout, making it easy to clean up after your pup.

Future Developments

Exciting changes are coming! As of 2025, Greenacres Park is in the midst of a significant expansion. Phase II improvements are scheduled to kick off in mid-March 2025 and should wrap up by mid-July.

This $2 million project, largely funded through state and federal grants, aims to add more variety to the park's offerings and make it even more accessible for everyone in the community.
