About the Location
A Glimpse into History
What we now know as Edwidge Woldson Park wasn't always called that. Back in 2010, the former Pioneer Park got a new name to honor Edwidge Woldson after her daughter Myrtle made a generous gift to the community in her mother's memory.
The park is historically significant, being part of the Marycliff-Cliff Park National Register Historic District. Before becoming a public space, these grounds belonged to some of Spokane's big names, including D.C. Corbin and even United States Senator George Turner.
The View From Above
Spanning about 10 acres between Seventh Avenue and Cliff Drive on Spokane's lower South Hill, this park offers something truly special: perspective.
Perched on elevated ground, you'll find panoramic views of downtown Spokane and the mountain ranges beyond. If you're an early riser or sunset chaser, you're in for a treat - the vistas are particularly magical during these golden hours when the city is bathed in warm light.
What Makes It Special
The Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens are a notable feature here. Built between 1889 and 1932, these gardens fell into abandonment after the 1940s but were lovingly restored between 2005 and 2007 thanks to community dedication and funding. When they reopened to the public in 2007, they brought back a piece of Spokane's past.
Wandering through, you'll discover a charming tea house, vibrant perennial and rose gardens, and a serene pond. The Arts & Crafts-style terraces, historic basalt retaining walls, and stone stairways transport you to another time altogether.
Another highlight is the Corbin Art Center. Housed in what used to be D.C. Corbin's residence, it now buzzes with creative energy, offering classes in photography, art, and gardening for people of all ages.
Paths to Wander
The walking paths winding through the park grounds offer different angles of the city and landscape with every turn.
Note that some trails here are on the challenging side - steep, narrow, and sometimes unpaved. You'll want to wear proper shoes, and these paths might not be ideal if you're visiting with very young children, have mobility issues, or are pushing a stroller.
The Experience
Edwidge Woldson Park feels like a peaceful retreat right in the middle of Spokane. The expansive lawns at the top of the hill are good spots for picnics - or places to toss a frisbee or just lie back and cloud-watch.
Within the park, you'll discover benches where you can sit, catch your breath, dive into a good book, or simply gaze out at the impressive views. It's where Spokane's natural beauty and history come together in a peaceful setting.
